the Manor Explanation: I read this as the plain old "Manor". it certainly isn't a protectorate -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr 25 mins (2006-01-16 11:21:52 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- one could say "the Great Manor" - to cover a larger area. Note that Heerlijkheid is sometimes translated as Seigneurie, but as this is specifically Norman French it would not be suitable for a Dutch Manor (in my opinion). But if someone has a better idea... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 1 hr 32 mins (2006-01-16 11:28:53 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- From Encarta Winkler Prins heerlijkheid* heerlijkheid (Frans: seigneurie; Engels: manor), in de middeleeuwen de benaming voor het overheidsgezag dat men uitoefent krachtens eigen recht... hoge heerlijkheid* hoge heerlijkheid of halsheerlijkheid, voorheen de benaming voor die heerlijkheid waar ook criminele of halszaken mochten worden berecht. http://nl.encarta.msn.com/heerlijkheid.html -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 4 hrs 58 mins (2006-01-16 14:54:24 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- On further reflection, I would put "Great Manor". |
