The fortifications on Monte Grappa anchored the western end of the Piave River defense line, to which the Italian Army had retreated during the Caporetto debacle, to the eastern edge of the mountains that run from there all the way to the Swiss border and beyond. The eponymous summit reaches 5,823 feet (1,775 meters) above sea level, in the middle of a mountain mass containing a number of other promontories.
