At present, neither standard carries much weight, though Microsoft is a strong supporter of XrML, and has licensed the technology for its own rights management solution. Major competitors such as Authentica and Liquid Machines don't support the language, in part because the standard doesn't allow for dynamic rights revocation.

"You can always go into our implementation through the client or server and delete the key," says Authentica's DeMarines. "In XrML, once you have created a policy, it resides in a voucher with the document, and you can not change the rights in that voucher."
