Foley is the art of "re-creation'" of sound effects for film, television and radio productions, performed by a Foley Artist on a Foley Stage in a Post Production studio.
The Foley Artist utilizes of many different types of wood, shoes, and numerous other props, e.g., glasses, chairs, chains, car hoods, clothes, and virtually whatever makes a noise, then replaces the original sound in entirety or embellishes the existing "live"
elements to create a real to life track. Virtually all films have a Foley track.

'Foley' mainly means a particular method of recording,
but it has also come to mean a class of sounds.
Today, the 'Foley' department of a film sound postproduction team is the
folks who record -some- of the sound effects by performing the sounds with
soundmaking props, in sync with the picture, which they watch as they
perform.
Confusion about what 'Foley' means tends to arise because there are
libraries of 'Foley' sound effects recordings for editing use; here, the
term 'Foley' means that those recordings are of the kinds of sounds that Foley is most often called upon to provide (Footsteps, props, body falls,
hand taps, etc.), not that they're being performed in sync to picture.
