French term

portance

French to English Marketing Sports / Fitness / Recreation snowboard
From descriptions of snowboards. Portance is often used to describe a board's lift, or "float" through snow, but I'm wondering here if it's not more the idea of weight-bearing capacity (ie the board is suited to heavier riders). I say this because most of the board descriptions are for users weighing 50-90 kg, and this one is for 70-100+.
But I'm not sure, because the first section talks about "recherche de portance" - I'm thinking weight-bearing, and the second sections talks about "ameliorer la portance", which sounds more like float.

I'd be interested in your thoughts. Here is the text:
Conçu pour le free rider de niveau expert, qui pratique majoritairement hors piste, à la recherche de portance et de trajectoires précises.
Réactive et puissante sans effort à vitesse soutenue, très grande fluidité.
Shape étudié pour améliorer la portance et une excellente tenue en courbe.
158 cm: 60-95 kg
164 cm: 70-100+ kg

Discussion

Drmanu49 Sep 14, 2007:
I guess float is often used, check the ref.
French Foodie (asker) Sep 14, 2007:
Thanks Drmanu49. Your explanation makes sense.
Drmanu49 Sep 14, 2007:
The shape (width and spatula length) is built to increase the board's capacity to stay on top of the snow or not to sink in deep powder snow. Lift, carrying/float capacity all really mean the same. I'll check my bibliography for a better word.

But weight-bearing capacity or lift may be used IMO.

For what it's worth:
I found these 2 terms with the following definition on the Grand Dictionnaire Terminologique (Quebec's online terminology bank), for the fields of Physics and Aerodynamics.
