If you look tellern up in the Grosse Duden, you find:
tel|lern <sw. V.; hat> [zu sieheTeller] (Schwimmen): den [gestreckten] Körper durch leichte Handbewegungen im Wasser bewegen od. in Ruhelage halten.
Quelle:
DUDEN - Das große Wörterbuch der deutschen Sprache in 10 Bänden.

So it probably means aus Ruhelage geraten. I cannot think of a more elegant translation at the moment, but this should help you!!
Good luck!

shimmy
a synonym for "austellern" would be "schlingern", I guess, which means roll, or shimmy, sway, lurch ( vehicles, rail cars etc). Hope this helps!
