The expression 'skitt au' is developed from an earlier one 'skitt, la gå', where 'skitt' is used as a swearword, somewhat milder than the English 'shit', and 'la gå' means 'never mind', 'let it pass', 'leave it alone', to be used mostly when you give up on a problem.
