in situations when a backup bar is infeasible to use due to fabrication costs, friction stir welding can be accomplished through use of a double shoulder tool or bobbin tool. The bobbin tool has dual shoulders, one for applying load on the topside and another for applying load on the backside of the component.

Pour effectuer une opération de soudage par friction, lorsqu'une barre de soutien ne peut être installée à cause des coûts de fabrication, il est possibe d'utiliser un outil double épaulement ou une bobine. La bobine possède deux épaulements, l'un pour applique la charge sur le dessus et l'autre pour appliquer la charge sur les côtés arrières de la pièce.
