Dithering becomes objectionable when the pattern is diffuse, and when the palette used is obviously alien to the original image. (cleverchimp.com)
If you can see any dithering it is because you are running in 8-bit mode and the colour does not have a close equivalent in the 6x6x6 web palette. (WPDFD, LTD)
Dithering in photos is generally more visible because the dithering is not in a predictable pattern. (Pat Kalbaugh)
