“We'd hoped vaguely to fall in love but hadn't worried much about it, because we'd thought we had all the time in the world. Love had seemed so final and so dull -- love was what ruined our parents. Love had delivered them to a life of mortgage payments and household
repairs; to unglamorous jobs and the flourescent aisles of a supermarket at two in the afternoon. We'd hoped for love of a different kind, love that knew and forgave our human frailty but did not miniaturize our grander ideas of ourselves. It sounded possible. If we didn't rush or grab, if we didn't panic, a love both challenging and nurturing might appear. If the person was imaginable, then the person could exist.”

Esperaríamos vagamente nos apaixonar por alguém, mas não nos preocupávamos muito, pois acreditávamos ter todo o tempo do mundo. O amor parecia tão extremo e bobo - era o que tinha destruído os nossos pais. O amor lhes tinha proporcionado uma vida de pagamentos de hipoteca e reparos domésticos, empregos sem glamour e os corredores fluorescentes de um supermercado às duas da tarde. Nós esperávamos por um outro tipo de amor, um amor que entendesse e perdoasse nossa fragilidade humana sem minimizar a ideia grandiosa que tínhamos de nós mesmos. Parecia possível. -For how long do you think the lake has been frozen?
I broke the silence as we visualized the huge lake at the Hyde Park. It was a rare sunny day in London, producing a stunning lightning reflection in the water. I noticed that some parts of the lake remained frozen due to the intense coldness of the previous days. I was enchanted by the contrast between the frozen and unfrozen part of the lake - the reflection of the sun was more intense in the solid part.
- I don’t know. - He looked at me with curiosity - What a question. It always looks like this when it’s that cold.
- Oh ...
I had never seen a frozen lake before.
- Want some? - He gently offered me the hot cup he was holding.
I took the cup from his hands and sniffed it.
- English tea?
He agreed.
- As usual – I laughed, giving him back the cup – No, thanks. I prefer coffee.
I looked at him, looking thoughtfully with his hands tucked into the coat. I felt too introspective to say anything.
- Is there tea in Brazil?
- Of course there is – I answered.
- Good. Otherwise I would not visit you - the boy laughed sheepishly.
For years there was no snow in London and that year it had snowed for three days in a road. It was still possible to see some parts of the park covered in snow, melting slowly as the cold softened.
- Shall we take a walk for a while? - He asked, as he continued drinking the tea, like he had always been in all our visits to the park. And it was amazing to think that I would miss a cup of tea that I had never even tasted. | Translation - Portuguese
- Há quanto tempo você acha que o lago congelou?
Quebrei o silêncio enquanto visualizávamos o lago enorme do Hyde Park. Era um raro dia de sol em Londres, que produzia um reflexo rosado bonito na água. Notei que algumas partes do lago ainda estavam congeladas devido ao frio intenso que fizera nos dias anteriores. Observei bem o contraste entre a parte congelada e a descongelada do lago - o reflexo do sol era mais forte na parte sólida.
- Não sei. – ele me olhou com curiosidade – Que pergunta. Sempre fica assim quando faz muito frio.
- Ah...
Eu nunca tinha visto um lago congelado antes.
- Quer um pouco? – ele ofereceu o copo quente de papelão, gentilmente.
Agarrei o copo na mão e cheirei.
- Chá inglês?
Ele acenou que sim com a cabeça.
- Como sempre – ri, devolvendo-lhe o copo – Não, obrigada. Prefiro o café.
Olhei-o de relance, com seu ar pensativo e as mãos encolhidas para dentro do casaco. Eu já me sentia reclusa demais para dizer qualquer coisa.
- No Brasil não tem chá?
- Claro que tem – respondi.
- Ah, bom. Senão eu não iria visitar você – o rapaz riu timidamente.
Fazia anos que não nevava em Londres e, naquele ano, nevara durante três dias seguidos. Ainda era possível ver algumas partes do parque cobertas em neve, derretendo aos poucos conforme o frio amenizava.
- Quer dar mais uma caminhada? – ele perguntou, enquanto continuava tomando o chá, como sempre estivera em todas nossas visitas ao parque. E era incrível pensar que eu iria sentir falta de um chá que sequer cheguei a provar. |
