Source text - Greek (Ancient) Πανταχῇ ὦν μοι δῆλα ἐστὶ ὅτι ἐμάνη μεγάλως ὁ Καμβύσης· οὐ γὰρ ἂν ἱροῖσί τε καὶ νομαίοισι ἐπεχείρησε καταγελᾶν. εἰ γάρ τις προθείη πᾶσι ἀνθρώποισι ἐκλέξασθαι κελεύων νόμους τοὺς καλλίστους ἐκ τῶν πάντων νόμων, διασκεψάμενοι ἂν ἑλοίατο ἕκαστοι τοὺς ἑωυτῶν· οὕτω νομίζουσι πολλόν τι καλλίστους τοὺς ἑωυτῶν νόμους ἕκαστοι εἶναι. 2 οὔκων οἰκός ἐστι ἄλλον γε ἢ μαινόμενον ἄνδρα γέλωτα τὰ τοιαῦτα τίθεσθαι· ὡς δὲ οὕτω νενομίκασι τὰ περὶ τοὺς νόμους πάντες ἄνθρωποι, πολλοῖσί τε καὶ ἄλλοισι τεκμηρίοισι πάρεστι σταθμώσασθαι, ἐν δὲ δὴ καὶ τῷδε. 3 Δαρεῖος ἐπὶ τῆς ἑωυτοῦ ἀρχῆς καλέσας Ἑλλήνων τοὺς παρεόντας εἴρετο ἐπὶ κόσῳ ἂν χρήματι βουλοίατο τοὺς πατέρας ἀποθνήσκοντας κατασιτέεσθαι· οἳ δὲ ἐπ᾽ οὐδενὶ ἔφασαν ἔρδειν ἂν τοῦτο. 4 Δαρεῖος δὲ μετὰ ταῦτα καλέσας Ἰνδῶν τοὺς καλεομένους Καλλατίας, οἳ τοὺς γονέας κατεσθίουσι, εἴρετο, παρεόντων τῶν Ἑλλήνων καὶ δι᾽ ἑρμηνέος μανθανόντων τὰ λεγόμενα, ἐπὶ τίνι χρήματι δεξαίατ᾽ ἂν τελευτῶντας τοὺς πατέρας κατακαίειν πυρί· οἳ δὲ ἀμβώσαντες μέγα εὐφημέειν μιν ἐκέλευον. οὕτω μέν νυν ταῦτα νενόμισται, καὶ ὀρθῶς μοι δοκέει Πίνδαρος ποιῆσαι νόμον πάντων βασιλέα φήσας εἶναι. | Translation - Italian Dunque per me è chiaro che Cambise era enormemente impazzito, sennò, infatt,i non avrebbe iniziato a deridere riti sacri e tradizioni. Se infatti qualcuno proponesse a tutti gli uomini di scegliere fra tutte le usanze quelle più belle, dopo aver ben riflettuto, ognuno sceglierebbe le proprie; a tal punto ognuno ritiene che le proprie tradizioni siano le migliori di tutte. Non è logico quindi che un uomo, se non uno impazzito, ridicolizzi simili cose. Che tutti la pensino così riguardo alle tradizioni è possibile dedurlo da altre prove, anche da questa: Dario, durante il suo regno, convocati i Greci presso di lui, domandò a loro per quanto denaro erano disposti a nutrirsi della carne dei loro padri morti. Essi risposero che non l'avrebbero fatto a nessun prezzo. Allora Dadio chiamati quelli che fra gli Indiani vengono chiamati Callati, i quali divorano i genitori, chiese alla presenza degli Elleni che ascoltavano grazie ad un interprete, a quale prezzo avrebbero bruciato nel fuoco i loro padri morti. Quelli gridando acutamente lo esortarono a non dire simili empietà. Così grande è la forza della tradizione e penso che Pindaro abbia detto giusto affermando che "la consuetudine è regina di tutte le cose". |
