新日本製鐵株式会社は、このたび技術開発本部先端技術研究所において、今後の高性能パワー半導体デバイスの量産・普及のキー材料である６インチ口径の炭化ケイ素（以下、SiC）単結晶ウェハの開発に国内で初めて成功いたしました。
１．SiCウェハは低炭素社会を実現する革新的材料
SiCウェハは、現在、ダイオードやトランジスタなどの半導体デバイスの製造に用いられているシリコンウェハに比べ、デバイスで の電力変換損失を半分以下に抑えることができます。また耐電圧性や耐熱性にも優れるため、太陽光発電や自動車（EV/HEV等）など、高電圧・高温で使用 されるパワーエレクトロニクス分野に適した材料です。
このような優れた特性を持つSiCウェハを用いたパワー半導体デバイスが広く社会に普及することにより、各分野において大幅な電力損失低減が実現でき、大きな省エネルギー・CO2削減効果が期待されています。
２． SiCデバイスの製造コスト低減と適用分野の拡大
現在市販されている高品質SiCウェハは、３インチおよび４インチ口径が主流となっており、これらのSiCウェハを前提とした半導体デバイスの開発・商品 化が各半導体メーカーにより進められていますが、デバイス生産の効率化および大電流・高電圧分野のSiCデバイスの開発・商品化に対するニーズが非常に強 く、これらのニーズに対応する大口径のSiCウェハが求められていました。
SiCウェハの6インチ化により、現在、商品化されている家電用インバーター、ＩＴ用電源、太陽光発電用パワーコンディショナー向けのSiCデバイスの生産効率が向上し、デバイスの製造コストの低下が期待されますの生産効率が向上し、デバイスの製造コストの低下が期待されます。

Nippon Steel corporation at our engineering development department advanced technology laboratory has succeeded in the development of a silicon carbide (SiC) single crystal wafer with a diameter of 6 inches, which is the key material to the mass production and the dissemination of high-performance power semiconductor devices in the future.
1. SiC wafers, innovative material, fulfilling low carbon society
SiC wafers can restrict loss of power conversion to less than half that of silicon wafers, which are commonly used for manufacturing semiconductor devices such as diodes and transistors. Since this material has a high voltage and high thermal resistance, it is also suitable for the power electronics field which requires these properties, such as a solar power generation and electric or hybrid electric vehicles (EV/HEV). The widespread use of power semiconductor devices with SiC wafers which have superior properties could significantly reduce power loss in a wide variety of fields. The move is expected to save a large amount of energy and to curtail carbon emissions.
2. Reduction in production cost and extension of application of SiC devices
High quality SiC wafers 3 or 4 inches in diameter are now mainly on the market. Most semiconductor makers have been developing and commercializing their products on the assumption of the availability of SiC wafers. However, there is a strong need for the efficiency of production and the development and commercialization of SiC devices in the large current and high voltage field, calling for large diameter SiC in response. By using 6 inch-SiC wafers, the production efficiency of SiC devices for current commercial products such as household inverters, IT power supply and power conditioners for solar power generators will improve, so that the production cost is expected to be reduced.

“Household batteries” are the small portable batteries used daily by most people in devices such as flashlights, watches, hearing aids, and smoke detectors, but do not include the larger batteries used in motor vehicles, commercial and industrial, military and other applications. They are called “dry-cell batteries” because they contain no liquid electrolyte.
When choosing batteries, consideration is generally given to the drain or power requirements of the application, as well as the costs and the shelf life of different batteries. However, as consumers become more environmentally conscious, people are now asking more questions about the environmental impact of battery disposal and whether a recycling option is available.
At one time, small amounts of mercury were used as an additive in alkaline batteries to prevent possible ruptures. In response to environmental concerns, battery manufacturers developed new technologies that eliminated the need for mercury in
cylindrical and rectangular batteries. Cylindrical and rectangular alkaline batteries have been produced in the U.S. without the addition of mercury since 1993.
The successful elimination of mercury from alkaline batteries removed the need to recycle these batteries as a way to minimise mercury pollution. However, there is still the opportunity to develop recycling technologies for the purpose of resource conservation that could be both economical and environmentally beneficial. Currently, the battery industry is working to develop improved recycling technologies. Although considerable progress has been made, environmentally beneficial and cost-effective recycling technologies are not universally available.

家庭用電池は懐中電灯、時計、補聴器および煙探知機などの機器で一般に使われている小さな携帯電池であり、車両、商業、工業および軍用などの用途に用いられる大型の電池は含まれない。それらは電解液を含まないので、乾電池と呼ばれている。
電池を選ぶときには、費用や異なる電池の保管寿命と同様に、消耗や機器の必要電源などが一般に考慮される。しかしながら、消費者はより環境を意識するようになっており、電池廃棄の環境への影響やリサイクル利用が可能かなどの疑問を以前より持つようになっている。
かつては、破裂防止のため、アルカリ電池に添加剤として少量の水銀が使われていた。環境懸念に応じて、円筒形および長方形電池の水銀の必要性を排除した新技術が、電池製造業者により開発された。1993年より水銀の添加されていない円筒形および長方形アルカリ電池が米国で製造されている。
アルカリ電池での水銀撤廃の成功は、水銀汚染最小化の方法である、これらの電池リサイクルの必要性をも取り除いた。しかし、経済的および環境的に利益となり得る資源保護を目的とするリサイクル技術の開発機会はまだある。現在、電池産業はリサイクル技術の向上に取り組んでいる。大きな前進にもかかわらず、環境的利益および費用対効果の高いリサイクル技術はすべてに適用可能なわけではない。
