Italian to English: Veltroni on the G8: "The nation needs the truth"

MILAN (Reuters) – Walter Veltroni, newly installed leader of the Democratic Party, condemned today his institution’s failure to approve the creation of a commission that would have investigated the events that took place at the Group of Eight conference in Genoa in 2001, where violence led to the death of Carlo Giuliani, an anti-G8 demonstrator.
In an open letter to the mayor of Genoa, Marta Vincenzi – in which Veltroni yesterday called the failure to institute the commission a disappointment and an insult - he explains that the truth about what happened must be ascertained, and offers his solidarity to the citizens of Genoa.
"Not one of them, not one of us, can forget those days,” the mayor of Rome writes in his letter. "They were a waking nightmare: clashes in the streets between police and demonstrators, young people beaten, the city overrun by black block gangs (...) Six years have passed, but these wounds have still not healed (...) there’s but one cure for them: the truth must come out, the full truth about what happened during the days of the summit.
"This is the only path, the only way,” adds Veltroni, remembering how then-President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi asked that “full light” be shed upon the events.
The Constitutional Affairs Committee of the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Parliament, failed yesterday to pass a motion that would have created the investigatory committee. Voting against the measure – besides the opposition CDL (House of Liberties) – were the Union of Christian Democrats, and Italy of Values, parties in the government, which had requested that the commission be charged with investigating not only of the actions of the public security forces, but also of the demonstrators.
In his letter, Veltroni asserts that while that the justice system is doing its part, “the investigatory committee would have – still should – reconstruct the facts, all the facts, and clarify who was responsible, who fulfilled their responsibilities and who came up short. We shouldn’t be afraid of the truth.”
"There’s still time to set things right, to set up the investigative committee I propose, my dear Marta; Genova can do no less,” concludes Veltroni. "It’s important for our democracy, which has only to gain from truth and transparency in her institutions.”
