National interests in a global crisis: German companies want to profit from the US stimulus package too. Above all, environmental technology could become the forerunner.
Berlin – The German economy hopes to be able to profit from the US stimulus package. “Above all we expect new possibilities in the USA for German environmental technology,” said Barbara Konner, America expert for the German Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK), to the Tagesspiegel. Anton Börner, President of the Federal Association of Wholesale and Foreign Trade (BGA), also sees big opportunities in renewable energies and in environmental technology. “There (in these fields) we are leading worldwide, there we will get something at any rate,” said Börner to the Tagesspiegel. New orders could also emerge for German companies in medical technology and other high-tech areas, says Börner.
The stimulus package, on which the Senate and House of Representatives have agreed after weeks of negotiations, has a volume of just under 790 billion dollars. The rescue package plans tax cuts as well as investments in infrastructure of more than 150 billion dollars. With the rescue package Obama wants to pull the USA out of its toughest economic crisis since the 1930s.
Downwind the Germans are getting word that the controversial “Buy American Clause” in the current version has been toned down. The House of Representatives had originally wanted to link any kind of help towards the purchase of “made-in-the-USA goods.” After international protest – also from Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel – instead of the Buy American Clause, federal contract awards must now be compatible with the regulations of the World Trade Organization. BGA boss Börner praises the toning down of the clause. “Protectionism cannot take hold because the USA, with all the gigantic stimulus packages that it has issued and will issue yet, are desperately dependent on foreign investors,” says Börner. “I don’t believe in a transatlantic trade war. Danger is no longer an issue.”
DIHK expert Konner knows that the German and American economies are already closely connected today. Every 50th position in the German workplace is created by an American company. Furthermore, the USA is the most important trade partner for Germany outside of the European Union.
“We will surely profit”, says the Association of German Construction Industry and “German companies can continue to emerge confidently in the USA,” confirms Barbara Konner from the DIHK. “The companies have much to offer,” agrees Sigrid Zirbel, director for the North and Latin America division of the Federal Association of German Industry.
