Source text - French Culture européenne, où es-tu?
Frédéric Martel a enquêté pendant cinq ans sur les industries culturelles dans le monde. Trente pays et plus de 1200 interviews plus tard, Mainstream décrypte le jeu des acteurs, la circulation des contenus, les stratégies des uns et des autres. Quid de l’Europe ? Analyse.
Frédéric Martel n’est pas un sociologue de salon, de ceux qui refont le monde dans le cadre feutré d’un club select, sans jamais se frotter aux réalités. Pour son enquête, le chercheur et journaliste a écumé les capitales de l’entertainment, d’Hollywood à Bollywood, des studios qatari d’Al-Jazeera au siège mexicain de Televisa, en passant par l’Afrique subsaharienne, la Chine, la Corée, le Brésil, l’Egypte... Et bon nombre de pays européens.
"Pendant longtemps, la culture produite et l’information diffusée par l’Europe bénéficiaient d’une influence considérable, observe-t-il. Aujourd’hui, dans les échanges culturels internationaux, le Vieux Continent rencontre de nombreux concurrents. Il ne sombre pas, mais se trouve confronté à une compétition accrue, liée au succès des contenus américains et à l’émergence de nouveaux pays exportateurs de culture et d’info."
De fait, depuis une dizaine d’années, les exportations européennes de films, de programmes télé et de musique reculent au rythme de 10% par an. L’inverse des Etats-Unis, qui progressent de 10% chaque année, au point de représenter actuellement 50% des exportations mondiales de contenu. L'Europe des 27, elle, arrive en deuxième position, avec un tiers des exportations… Et elle est le premier importateur mondial de contenu - les flux intra-européens restant toutefois supérieurs aux extra-européens.
Preuve d’une stagnation culturelle de l’Europe, faute de s’intéresser suffisamment aux cultures populaires et au marché de masse ?
Pas si schématique, répond Frédéric Martel, tout en notant la "faiblesse des universités européennes qui n’assurent pas le travail d’expérimentation sur la culture et n’ont pas de liens avec les industries, le retard technologique et l'insuffisance de l’innovation, la méfiance répétée à l’égard d’Internet et du numérique, le départ vers les Etats-Unis des créateurs..."
Voire un souci dans la définition même de la culture en Europe : "Historique et patrimoniale, élitiste souvent, anti-mainstream aussi, elle n'est peut-être pas en phase avec le temps de la mondialisation et de la culture numérique, ne correspond plus nécessairement au standard international en matière de flux de contenus."
Les cultures de chaque pays européen vont bien
Mais si elle n’est plus une culture de masse, l’Europe continue de fournir des produits de niche pour d’importants segments de marché, notamment nationaux.
"A l'échelle du monde, comme au niveau européen, il est absolument faux de dire que les cultures locales, régionales et nationales sont fragilisées par la mondialisation", rappelle Frédéric Martel.
"En Amérique latine, la musique vit bien dans chaque pays ; en Asie, les "dramas" coréens, taïwanais ou japonais sont très aimés ; la littérature est souvent très nationale partout dans le monde ; quant au cinéma, il conserve une production un peu partout, parfois faible comme en Angleterre ou en Italie, mais parfois proche des 50 % du box office, comme en France ou en République Tchèque."
Ainsi, l’expansion de la culture américaine dans chaque pays européen s’est faite aux dépens des "autres" cultures, sans guère affaiblir celles nationales. "Chaque homme a désormais deux cultures : la sienne – singulière, nationale et locale – et la culture américaine. Il n’y a pas uniquement standardisation, mais à la fois renforcement du local et du global. On est en même temps plus français et davantage américanisé. Internet décuple ce phénomène : les produits culturels d’hier deviennent de plus en plus des services, des formats et des flux culturels – à la fois très spécifiques et très standardisés."
"Si vous discutez avec de jeunes européens, chacun aura une bonne connaissance de la musique ou du cinéma national, poursuit le journaliste. Il vous parlera de produits de niche et de la culture de sa communauté, tout en étant très américanisé dans ses pratiques culturelles. Le seul problème, c’est qu’étant allemand, il ne s’intéressera pas à la culture italienne ; étant français, il sera indifférent à la culture tchèque."
Casser le catéchisme culturel national
Car faute d’unité linguistique, d’un marché intérieur cohérent et d’une croissance économique, l’Europe n’est pas un continent, mais une succession de marchés nationaux qui dialoguent peu entre eux culturellement : "Grâce à une zone largement unifiée, avec 300 millions d’habitants et une langue commune, le marché intérieur américain est puissant ; cette masse critique existe aussi, pour une part, en Chine, en Inde, au Brésil, peut-être dans les pays arabes, mais ni en Europe, ni en Asie du Sud Est, ni en Amérique latine, compte tenu de la diversité des nations qui les composent".
Comment, dans ce contexte, parvenir à édifier une culture commune européenne ?
"C'est extrêmement difficile, estime l’auteur de "Mainstream". Comme on le dit en Pologne, il est facile, avec des poissons, de faire une soupe ; mais lorsqu'on a la soupe, il est beaucoup plus difficile de retrouver les poissons ! Nous en sommes là. On a des cultures nationales, mais plus de culture commune au niveau européen. Je parle ici, bien sûr, de culture de masse, d'entertainment, de culture des jeunes ; nous sommes mieux armés en ce qui concerne l'art contemporain, la danse moderne, le théâtre expérimental, la littérature d'avant-garde. Il y a bien des valeurs communes européennes. Mais dans l'industrie, nous sommes fragiles. On a pourtant des atouts, comme de grands groupes européens : Pearson, Bertelsmann, Prisa, Lagardère, Vivendi - mais ces groupes produisent du local et de l'américanisation. Avec le français Vivendi, nous avons le premier producteur de jeu-vidéo et la première major de la musique au monde : mais Universal fait surtout de la musique anglo-saxonne et Activision-Blizzard des jeux-vidéos américains. Avec l'allemand Bertelsmann, on a le premier éditeur de livres au monde, Random House : mais ils font surtout le Da Vinci Code et des best-sellers américains."
Une piste, parmi d’autres, pour avancer : prendre au sérieux la diversité culturelle européenne. "Pas tant sa défense dans les grandes instances internationales, comme l'Unesco et l'OMC, mais dans sa réalité concrète. Aider nos minorités à être plus visibles, à créer des œuvres différentes, singulières, originales. Casser le catéchisme culturel national et le contrôle culturel pour s'ouvrir. C'est en reconnaissant la culture des Français issus de l'immigration, par exemple, qu'on réussira à renouveler la culture française et à lui permettre de dialoguer en Europe et dans le monde. Cette valorisation réelle et pragmatique de la diversité sur le territoire européen devrait être une priorité, pour la revitaliser la culture du Vieux Continent, la sortir de son statisme."
Et pallier ainsi aussi au vieillissement de la population européenne, qui prive les industries créatives du moteur principal de l’entertainment : les jeunes. "La demande inépuisable de produits culturels de la part de la jeunesse indienne, brésilienne ou arabe (une large part de ces pays a moins de 25 ans) est un élément décisif du succès émergent de ces régions. C’est a contrario une des raisons de la stagnation du Japon", précise Frédéric Martel.
Un manque de stratégies communes
Un rôle à jouer par les institutions européennes pour impulser des collaborations entre les industries culturelles des différents pays, et booster leur place sur les marchés ? Le chercheur n’y croit pas.
"On ne lutte pas contre la puissance du marché de l'entertainment américain par les subventions de l'Union européenne ! On peut lutter par la régulation, mais surtout en bâtissant des industries fortes. Je crois plus à Orange, Vivendi et Canal pour affronter les Américains, qu'en l'Etat. Mais les institutions nationales et européennes ont un rôle à jouer en encourageant, plutôt qu'en freinant les industries, les start-ups, l'innovation, et le développement d'Internet. Si ce livre permet de sensibiliser les Européens sur l’importance du soft power et les incite à se repositionner dans cette nouvelle donne internationale, il aura rempli un de ses offices !"
Via par exemple, un rapprochement stratégique entre médias de différentes nationalités. "C’est une idée, mais pour l’instant, ça reste un vœu pieu. Il n'existe pas de grand média européen. Marginalement, il y a le Financial Times et The Economist, mais ils ne s’adressent qu'aux élites. Ni RFI, ni la BBC, ni aucune radio ne parle aux Européens. Arte a une audience faible en France et minuscule en Allemagne : on n’est déjà pas capable de parler de culture aux Français en même temps qu'aux Allemands !"
D’autant qu’aujourd'hui, "nous avons plus de différences avec les Roumains, qu'avec les Américains, conclut Frédéric Martel. C'est bien cela le problème : nous sommes tous européens, mais l'identité européenne reste difficile à cerner. Quant à la culture européenne, elle se cherche encore."

Frédéric Martel has just completed an epic five year’ investigation of cultural industries throughout the world. Having weaved his way through 30 countries and conducted over 1,200 interviews; he unravels power relationships, information publication and the many and various strategies of those involved in his latest work “Mainstream”. So…Europe? Let’s take a look.
Frédéric Martel is pretty much the contrary of that species of sociologist that frequents exclusive, hush-hush, private member clubs and never gets a taste of real life. For his investigation, this intrepid researcher-journalist scoured the world’s entertainment hot-spots, covering Hollywood to Bollywood, Al-Jazeera’s Qatari studios and Televisa’s Mexican HQ, traversed sub-Saharan Africa, China, Korea, Brazil, Egypt and a myriad of other remote and distant lands... And, of course, a host of European countries.
Frédéric Martel explains that “For many, many years, any type of culture or information emanating from Europe was given royal treatment. Nowadays, in international cultural exchanges, the Old World has met its match. It’s not actually drowning but is standing face to face with ever-increasing competition resulting from the success of American information and the emergence of new culture and information exporter countries.”
For the last dozen years or so, European film, TV programme and music exports have slumped by 10% per year. The exact opposite of the United States, which reports a 10% rise every year and now handles 50% of the world’s information exports. The 27-State Europe ranks second, totalling a third of all exports… and it is the world’s leading information importer – intra-European flows remain higher than extra-European ones.
Is this then proof that Europe is culturally stagnating because it has not taken enough interest in popular culture and the mass market?
“It’s not as simplistic as that” replies Frédéric Martel, whilst highlighting the “inability of European universities to carry out cultural experimentation projects and their lack of links with the industries, technological slowness and inadequate innovation, constant scepticism as regards Internet and digitalism and the outflux of creators to the USA…”
Or maybe even a dilemma in actually defining culture in Europe: “It’s historic, a legacy, it’s often elitist and also anti-mainstream; it’s probably not in tune with globalization and digital culture and it doesn’t necessarily correspond to international information flow norms”.
Individual European country cultures still stand strong
Even if it may no longer be considered as a mass culture, Europe still continues to provide niche products for valuable market segments, specifically on national-levels.
“It is totally inaccurate, on a world and even on a European scale, to say that local, regional and national cultures have been weakened by globalization,” retorts Frédéric Martel.
“In Latin America, every country continues to vibrate to music; in Asia, Korean, Taiwanese and Japanese “dramas” continue to attract crowds; literature, read throughout the world, is essentially penned by national authors; as for cinema, films are made just about everywhere, even if production is minor in some countries such as England or Italy, it can reach up to 50% of box-office takings in France or in the Czech Republic.”
Consequently, American culture has spread through European countries at the expense of “other” cultures, yet almost without undermining national cultures. “Henceforth, human beings have two cultures: their own – distinctive, national and local – and American culture. It’s not just a matter of standardization, but also of strengthening the local and global aspects. We’re synchronously more ‘national’ and more American. Internet intensifies this phenomenon: yesterday’s cultural products become today’s cultural services, formats and flows – highly-specific and highly-standardized.”
“If you chat to young Europeans, they’ll all know a great deal about national music or cinema,” continues the journalist. “They’ll talk to you about niche products and community culture, yet will be extremely Americanized in their cultural practices. The only problem is that, if you’re German, you won’t take any interest in Italian culture; if you’re French, you’ll feel totally unconcerned by Czech culture.”
Overthrowing national cultural doctrine
Due to a lack of linguistic unity, of a coherent domestic market and of economic growth, Europe is not a continent but an amalgamation of national markets that, culturally-speaking, rarely converse with one another: “Considering that its area is extensively unified, that its 300 million inhabitants speak the same language, the United States domestic market is powerful; this critical mass also exists, to a certain extent, in China, India, Brazil, perhaps in Arabic countries, but not in Europe, nor in South-East Asia or Latin America, given the diversity of nations within these latter.”
How can we go about establishing a common European culture under such circumstances?
“It’s extremely difficult,” says the author of “Mainstream”. “As the Poles say: it’s easy to make soup with fish; but once you’ve got the soup, it’s a lot more difficult to recover the fish! This just about sums us up today. We have national cultures, but we no longer have a common European culture. Of course, I’m talking about mass culture here, entertainment, youth culture; we’re much better equipped when it comes to contemporary art, modern dance, experimental theatre or avant-garde literature. We have a multitude of common European values. But we’re not very strong industry-wise. Yet we do have great assets, such as major European groups: Pearson, Bertelsmann, Prisa, Lagardère, Vivendi – but these groups offer local and Americanized productions. The French group, Vivendi, ranks first in video game production and is world leader in the major record label field: yet Universal produces essentially Anglo-Saxon music and Activision-Blizzard American video games. Then there’s Bertelsmann, the German media group, with Random House, the world’s foremost publisher: but they principally produce works like the Da Vinci Code and other American bestsellers.”
One of the leads we have, among others, for moving forward is to: take European cultural diversity seriously. “Not so much by defending the cause in major international gatherings, such as UNESCO or the WTO, but rather in practical terms, by helping our minorities to become more visible, by creating distinctive, exceptional, original work. By overthrowing national cultural doctrine and cultural control so that we can bloom. By acknowledging the culture of French people of immigrant origin, for example, we can succeed in renewing French culture and in opening doors in Europe and throughout the world. We should prioritize this genuine, pragmatic promotion of diversity throughout Europe, to stimulate our Old World’s culture, to arouse it from its dormant state.”
And, as such, to offset European population aging, which deprives creative industries from their main entertainment generator: young people. “One of the key factors for the increasing success of areas such as India, Brazil or Arabic countries is the inexhaustible demand by young people for cultural products (these countries have a high percentage of under 25 year olds). A contrario, it is one of the reasons that Japan is stagnating,” states Frédéric Martel.
No common strategies
Could European institutions stimulate collaboration, partnerships between the cultural industries of the various countries and boost their market positions? The researcher does not think so.
“You can’t fight the strength of the American entertainment market with EU subventions! We can fight by regulating and more so by establishing strong industries. I bet more on Orange, Vivendi and Canal to face up to the Americans than the State. But national and European institutions do have a role to play by encouraging, rather than hindering, industries, start-ups, innovation and Internet development. If this book helps make Europeans aware of the importance of soft-power and encourages them to integrate this new international situation, then it will have fulfilled at least one of its purposes!”
For example, via strategic bridge-building between media groups of different countries. “It’s an idea, but for the moment it’s just wishful thinking. No major European media exists. On a minor scale, there’s the Financial Times and The Economist, but they only appeal to the elite. Neither the RFI, nor the BBC, nor any radio station speaks to Europeans. Arte has low audience ratings in France and they’re quasi non-existent in Germany: we aren’t even capable of talking about culture to the French and the Germans at the same time!”
Especially since today, “there are more differences between us and the Romanians than between us and the Americans,” concludes Frédéric Martel. “And that’s where the problem really lies: we’re all European, but European identity continues to elude us. And as for European culture, well, it’s still trying to discover itself.”

Le regard de P L.
Nul ne sait, aujourd'hui, combien de victimes pourra faire ce que l'on appelle désormais une pandémie. «Pandémie» ! C'est le mot le plus imprimé et prononcé sur la planète, ayant (provisoirement, sans doute) effacé le terme «la crise», même si, d'une certaine et ironique manière, les deux expressions se correspondent. Il ne faudrait pas, cependant, qu'une pandémie en cache une autre.
Il existe une pandémie plus silencieuse, plus durable, plus invisible, et que les médias et les opinions publiques, sans l'ignorer, certes, ont tout de même reléguée au rang des réalités acquises et fatales, dans la terrible routine du malheur - et dont les victimes sont des enfants. D'ici à 2010, on estime qu'il y aura au moins 100 millions d'orphelins du sida. Il faut retenir ce chiffre : toutes les 15 secondes dans le monde, le sida tue un père ou une mère. Vous avez bien lu : toutes les quinze secondes… Dans quelques jours, le 7 mai prochain, la Journée mondiale des orphelins du sida (JMOS) va sensibiliser les pouvoirs publics et une association au sigle intrigant, FXB, demandera aux pouvoirs publics, comme elle le fait chaque année à cette occasion, d'allouer 10 % du montant total destiné à la lutte contre le sida à la création de programmes pour soutenir les orphelins. FXB célèbre sa 20e année d'existence. Connaît-on l'histoire qui se cache derrière ces trois lettres ?
Tout commence par un sourire - un sourire disparu.
C'était celui d'un archange de 24 ans, dont le lumineux visage hante encore ceux qui l'ont croisé. Il était grand, beau, curieux des gens, il avait un cœur aussi gros que sa cervelle était bien faite, son esprit et son âme étaient habités par une seule vocation : le sauvetage.
- Il avait, raconte sa mère, la culture des guides, cette valeur fondamentale qui consiste à aider ceux qui sont égarés, les humains dans la détresse.
Hélicoptère
Dans les années 1980, pendant trois ans, de Vaud à Zermatt, des deux côtés des Alpes valaisannes, ce virtuose de l'hélicoptère avait secouru les skieurs à bout de ressources dans le brouillard, les alpinistes blessés dans leur chute, prisonniers d'une crevasse ou d'un gouffre, les victimes d'avalanches, les femmes sur le point d'accoucher dans des hameaux isolés par la neige, toutes celles et ceux que la montagne, le froid, les intempéries, avaient pris en traîtres - plus de 300 sauvetages effectués pour la compagnie Air Glacier, fondée par son père, B B. Il se prénommait F-X. Une nuit du 14 janvier 1986, lors du Paris-Dakar, l'hélico qu'il pilotait (transportant T S, patron de la célèbre course, le chanteur D B, la journaliste N O et l'ingénieur du son J-P Le F) s'est écrasé dans le désert pour des raisons demeurées sans réponse ou explication claire. Plusieurs hypothèses ont couru, dont la moins insolite, mais plausible, n'est pas celle de la vipère.
- Il fait froid, la nuit dans le désert, évoque sa mère. Un hélicoptère, cabine ouverte, posé sur le sable, c'est une source de chaleur. On peut imaginer qu'un reptile attiré par la chaleur - il y a une profusion de vipères dans ces régions - ait piqué un des passagers et que celui-ci, l'appareil ayant décollé, jambe tendue, pied en l'air, ait, par inadvertance, donné un coup au « pich », cette commande qui peut faire monter ou descendre l'hélico. À 200 mètres d'altitude, F volait à 80 km/heure, or voilà que, soudain, il accélère violemment, tombe à pic, étant passé de 80 à 200 à l'heure en un instant fulgurant. La trajectoire n'a pas pu être corrigée à temps.
Le mystère restera entier. Dans le langage technique, on identifie cela à une «perte de référence». Lorsque le lumineux F-X est mort en pleine jeunesse, sa mère a bien failli, à sa façon, perdre ses références. Elle s'appelle A du B. C'est une femme au destin romanesque. Grand-père maternel richissime magnat de l'étain en Bolivie, un père aristocrate français. Tout concourt à ce qu'elle passe sa vie dans les sphères insouciantes de la « café society », New York, Paris, Monte-Carlo, etc. Mais l'injustice du monde la révolte et elle se tourne vers le journalisme militant, la cause écologique, le refus de la bourgeoisie. Elle se consacre ensuite à la production de films, avec succès. Elle épouse B B et ils font ce fils, dont elle dit qu'elle est «fière de l'avoir eu». Lorsqu'il disparaît, « c'est comme un pilier qui s'écroule ». Désespoir. Elle veut «partir» : Médecins du monde, causes humanitaires, missions diverses - mais cela ne suffit pas à atténuer son chagrin. Elle décide de vendre la plus grande partie de ses biens (tableaux, bijoux), sa société de cinéma, son héritage - ça fait 100 millions de dollars avec quoi elle fonde l'association FXB, les initiales de son fils. Pour prolonger « le plus loin possible sa passion pour le secours des autres ».
Douleur
Très tôt, et avant bien des institutions, elle prendra conscience de la catastrophe planétaire du sida. Inlassable pèlerin, inépuisable lobbyiste, bâtisseur et inventeur, elle va à la rencontre de la douleur - Afrique, Brésil, Inde, etc. - crée plus de 100 programmes dans 20 pays - avec l'idée simple, efficace et unique de «villages» composés d'un réseau de 80 à 100 personnes, dont l'autonomie économique et sociale permettra de réinsérer les orphelins du sida. Son action, honorée, reconnue par toutes les instances internationales, consiste à «aller sur le terrain». Elle met les pieds dans la boue, mais elle sait aussi concerner les présidents, recueillir des fonds, quitte, à ses débuts, à affronter des autorités pénétrées d'incrédulité et d'inertie. Elle se souvient encore d'un gouverneur à Goa, lui disant : «Madame, il n'y a pas de sida dans mon État.»
Sauvetage
En 20 ans, elle ne s'en vantera jamais, mais les spécialistes et experts le disent à sa place : les activités de FXB ont contribué à changer la vie de 18 millions de gens dans le monde. Car il n'y a pas que les villages - l'association s'implique dans la gestion de l'eau, les soins palliatifs, les rénovations d'écoles, la scolarisation et les formations professionnelles, etc. C'est une véritable ONG - 420 employés - et l'on pourra se faire une idée de ses résultats en allant, à partir du 13 mai prochain, à l'Hôtel de ville de Paris, salle des Prévôts. Une exposition de photos prises dans les villages FXB fera mieux comprendre l'ampleur de la singulière réussite de la singulière comtesse du B.
- Les enfants du sida, en Afrique et ailleurs, étaient considérés comme des déchets, dit-elle. Ils étaient des proies faciles pour la prostitution, le travail forcé, condamnés à devenir des enfants soldats. Ils n'avaient pas de vie à vivre - aussi courte dût-elle être. Nous ne sommes évidemment pas les seuls - tant d'autres organisations officielles ou pas, se préoccupent de l'enfance et de ses droits. Mais j'ai voulu, en «ciblant» le cas des orphelins, respecter l'esprit qui habitait mon fils, le culte du sauvetage.
Quand elle décrit la personnalité de celui qu'on surnommait « le prince du Valais », A du B fait en sorte que sa voix ne tremble pas trop. Le temps a passé. Mais il surgira toujours une tristesse dans le regard fougueux de cette exemplaire femme. On songe alors à l'un des 22 films qu'elle produisit, dans sa précédente vie. L'un d'entre eux s'intitulait : L'important c'est d'aimer. On n'aura, je pense, aucun mal à deviner qui avait eu l'idée de ce beau titre.

Currently the most written and most spoken word on the planet, replacing and totally (though probably only ephemerally) erasing the term “crisis”, even if, ironically speaking, both these words correlate. Nevertheless, one pandemic should never be allowed to mask another.
An altogether more silent pandemic exists, one which is particularly persistent, highly invisible, and, one which, although admittedly not outrightly ignored by media and public opinion, has been relegated to the rank of those accepted and fatal realities that symbolize the terrible routinal spiral of misfortune – a misfortune whose victims are children. Between now and 2010, forecasts predict an estimated 100 million AIDS orphans. Keep this figure in mind: every 15 seconds, somewhere in the world, AIDS kills a father or a mother. Yes, you’ve read it correctly: every 15 seconds… In a few days time, on 7 May, the World AIDS Orphans Day (WAOD) will organize a grassroots campaign to increase the awareness of public powers, and an association bearing the intriguing acronym, FXB, will lobby the powers-that-be, as it does every year, to direct at least 10% of all HIV and AIDS funding to the creation of programmes supporting orphans. FXB is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. Do you know the origin of these three letters, of the story hidden behind them?
It all began with a smile – a smile now long-lost, gone forever.
The smile of a 24-year old archangel, whose radiant face continues to haunt those who had the chance to cross his path. He was tall, handsome, curious and interested in people, his generosity was boundless and his intelligence immeasurable, his spirit and soul were possessed by a sole vocation: rescue.
- As his mother says, he had the knowledge of alpine guides; that so-essential virtue focused on helping those who are lost, those in distress.
Helicopter
For three years during the 1980s, from Vaud to Zermatt, on both sides of the Pennine Alps, this helicopter virtuoso rescued skiers exhausted and lost in the fog, climbers injured in falls or imprisoned in crevasses or chasms, avalanche victims, women about to give birth in villages cut-off by the snow, men and women taken by surprise by the mountain, the cold, the bad weather – over 300 rescue operations were carried out by Air Glacier, the company founded by his father, B B. His name was F-X. On the night of the 14 January 1986, during the Paris-Dakar race, the helicopter he was flying (with, on-board, T S, founder of the famous race, the singer D B, the journalist N O and the sound engineer J-P Le F) crashed in the desert, for reasons unknown to this day. Several hypotheses spread, including the most out-of-the-ordinary, though perfectly plausible, story of the viper.
- It is cold at night in the desert, recalls his mother. A helicopter, cockpit open, sitting on the sand, is a direct source of heat. You can just imagine that a reptile, attracted by the heat - vipers are rife in these regions – bit one of the passengers, and that when the helicopter took off, this passenger, with his leg outstretched, foot high in the air, inadvertently kicked the “pitch”, the control used for directing the helicopter up or down. At 200 metres altitude, F was flying at 80 km/hour, when suddenly he accelerated brusquely, dropped instantaneously, having jumped from 80 to 200 km/hour in a split second. It was impossible to reset the trajectory in time.
The mystery remains unsolved. Technically-speaking, this is known as a “loss of external attitude references”. When the brilliant F-X died in the peak of his youth, his mother, in her own way, almost lost her references too. Her name is A du B. Her destiny is an incredible storybook. A fabulously wealthy maternal grandfather, a Bolivian tycoon, known as the “King of Tin”; a father, a French aristocrat. Everything was perfectly united to offer her a life that would embrace the carefree universe of the “café society”, New York, Paris, Monte-Carlo, etc. But the injustice of the world revolted her and so she turned towards militant journalism, the ecological cause, and total rejection of the bourgeoisie. She went on to devoting her life to producing films, with great success. She married B B and together they had this son; son, who she says she is so “proud to have had”. When he disappeared, “it was like a pillar that had collapsed”. Desolation. She wanted to “leave”: Médecins du monde, humanitarian causes, various missions – but not enough to alleviate her grief, her heartache. She decided to sell most of her possessions (works of art, jewellery), her film-making company, her inheritance - 100 million dollars with which she founded FXB International, FXB – her son’s initials. To carry on “as long as possible his passion for helping, for rescuing others”.
Pain
Very early on, and long before the institutions, she became aware of the universal catastrophe caused by AIDS. Indestructible crusader, inexhaustible lobbyist, pioneer and inventor, she ventured towards pain - Africa, Brazil, India, etc. – setting up over 100 programmes in 20 countries – with the simple, efficient and unique idea of creating “villages”, grouping together a network of 80 to 100 people, whose economic and social autonomy would offer the opportunity to rehabilitate AIDS orphans. Her action, honoured, recognized by all international bodies, implies “going on-site”. She can have her feet in the mud, labour, do the dirty work, but she can also interest presidents, collect funds, even when it means, as was the case at the beginning, standing up to authorities engulfed with scepticism and apathy. She still remembers a governor in Goa telling her: “My dear lady, AIDS does not exist in my state”.
Rescue
In over 20 years, she has never boasted, never bragged, but the specialists and the experts do it for her: the activities implemented by FXB have helped change the lives of 18 million people throughout the world. FXB is not just villages – the association is involved in water management, palliative care, renovating schools, education and vocational training, etc. It is a fully-fledged NGO - 420 employees – and to get an idea of the results obtained, from 13 May onwards, just pay a visit to the Prévôts Hall in the Hôtel de Ville of Paris. An exhibition of photos taken in the FXB villages will help you understand more profoundly the immensity of the remarkable success of the remarkable Countess du B.
- AIDS children, in Africa and elsewhere, were considered as waste, she says. They were easy prey for prostitution, forced labour, or condemned to become child soldiers. They had no life to live, no matter how short that life could have been. Obviously we are not alone – lots of other organizations, be they officially recognized or not, are concerned about childhood and childhood rights. But, in “targeting” the situation of orphans, I wanted to honour the spirit, the conscience of my son, this commitment to rescue.
When she describes the personality of the young man who was nicknamed “the Valais Prince”, A du B makes sure her voice does not tremble too much. Much time has passed. But a certain sadness forever remains in the passionate eyes of this exemplary woman. So we contemplate one of the 22 films that she produced in her bygone life. One of these was entitled: L'important c'est d'aimer (The Important Thing is to Love). It’s not very difficult to imagine who came up with the idea for this heavenly title.

The functionality will be driven by software inventory data on the console side. The Cxxx agent will log application usage metering statistics on both online and offline devices. Configuration will be stored in an XML file in a similar way to hardware/software inventory filters.
Self-Healing Faculties
Cxxx Pxxx v5’s self-healing technology will proactively detect unintentional application, file and configuration changes and automatically correct errors on client systems so that end-user service quality is maintained and a significant reduction in IT and help-desk support is achieved.
Application self-healing will be based on the principle of monitoring files of requested applications.
This feature will be driven by the software inventory information stored in the Pxxx database which will consequently provide a self-healing application picking list.
Auto-Protection
The Cxxx agent will be able to extend basic device protection. Cxxx Pxxx will enable desktop lock-down via an operational rule. Many customers, especially those deploying Pxxx in the education sector require certain settings to be non-modifiable by students/users. These settings include web browser homepage settings, network shares etc, which can be selected as parameters.
In terms of securing devices from viruses and malicious attacks that do not spread via e-mail, it is necessary to be able to block or lock certain ports so that such attacks can be slowed down or prevented. An operational rule will enable Pxxx administrators to specify ports to lock as required.

Grâce à cette interface les utilisateurs, peu expérimentés dans la conception de filtres et de XML, seront capable de mettre à jour rapidement et aisément les critères à appliquer aux inventaires.
Fonctions d’accès direct additionnelles
Accès direct, outil configurable en temps réel qui permet à l’administrateur d’avoir des accès directs de lecture et d’écriture sur les répertoires, les fichiers, les services et le registre d’un poste distant, contiendra les fonctions additionnelles suivantes :
• Gestion des processus (similaire à la Gestionnaire des tâches de Windows)
• Gestion des événements de Windows
Supervision d’applications
La supervision d’applications offre aux administrateurs de Pxxx une visibilité directe des applications installées et permet de les associer au cycle de vie de l’entreprise. Elle permet de corréler les données de l’inventaire logiciel basé sur certaines catégories : logiciels achetés/logiciels installés/logiciels utilisés.
La supervision comprend du “software metering” qui permet aux administrateurs d’inhiber le démarrage de certaines applications.
Cette fonctionnalité utilisera les données de l’inventaire logiciel au niveau de la console. L’agent Cxxx fournira des statistiques pour l’utilisation des applications et ceci pour les postes connectés et non-connectés. L’auto-réparation sera basée sur le principe de supervision des fichiers d’applications demandées.
Cette fonctionnalité utilisera les données de l’inventaire logiciel stockées dans la base de données Pxxx qui, en conséquence, fournira une sélection d’applications auto-réparables (picking list).
Auto-protection
L’agent Cxxx améliorera la protection générale des systèmes. Cxxx Pxxx permettra le verrouillage du bureau via une simple règle opérationnelle. Par exemple, nombreux clients, notamment ceux du secteur éducatif, estiment que certains paramètres tels ceux des pages d’accueil de sites web, de partages réseaux, etc. devraient être obligatoirement non-modifiables par les étudiants/utilisateurs.

Les configurations matérielles ont considérablement augmenté en nombre et en diversité : des mainframes et terminaux aux réseaux client-serveur, architectures Internet multi-niveaux (composées de combinaisons hétérogènes d'ordinateurs centraux, de PC, d'Assistants Numériques Personnels, de téléphones portables, de terminaux ATMs ou POS ainsi qu'une multitude d'autres systèmes). Vision64 permet de gérer à distance la totalité du système informatique des grandes entreprises équipées de 500 jusqu'à des dizaines et centaines de milliers de postes de travail.
