French to English volunteer translator
I am also a professional translator
: AMD Expression About
Before writing this ‘About’ section, I spent some time pondering how to describe myself. Am I translator? An editor? A writer? An agency? A teacher? A thinker? A doer? After a while, I came to a conclusion: I am all those things, but “Who?” isn’t the question here. Perhaps the real question is “Why?”.
Back in 2001, after having studied Philosophy and French at the University of Leeds and realising that being able to write a decent essay on Kant’s Categorical Imperative didn’t leave me with a great many career options, I decided to move to Paris for a year to teach English. I didn’t know it at the time but this decision changed my life. Within a week of being in Paris, I knew I would never go home. I have never loved a place so much. Within a few years, I was able to comprehend, speak, and read the language of Molière at the level of an educated native speaker. With the encouragement of friends, colleagues and family, I started to look for opportunities to carry out translation work, whilst continuing teaching. I slowly built these opportunities (from translating video games, apps and books to creating pedagogical materials for pilots, to writing copy for hotels and museums) into a source of income that enabled me to dedicate more and more time to the point where I now have a successful business, a wonderful team and can do what I love every day of my life.
So, why do I do what I do? I am a Francophile. I love French literature, music, wine, theatre, cinema, museums, traditions, gardens, parks, architecture and history. I was also a big lover of French food before I made the choice to become a vegan! I can think of nothing better than spending hours rendering a tourism magazine into perfect English, reproducing convincing dialogue for a video game or a play, creating tailor-made teaching content for busy professionals…
My mission is to offer great service in everything I do. It’s as simple as that. I know the difference between good and great. And this shows in everything I do. So why not get in touch today a?
Specialist Areas Literature, Art, Media and Culture
Fluidity and style are key when it comes to the translation of literary, artistic and cultural content such as articles, books and press releases. I thrive on puns and metaphors. Conceptual exactness and terminological precision are essential when it comes to apps and video games. Hitting the right tone is what I'm known for. Come to me with your content and I’ll be in my element!
Tourism and Leisure
I have an in-depth understanding of the travel sector. Whether you are a hotel, an airline, a restaurant, a vineyard, a museum or an historical site, I can translate your websites, brochures, guide books, menus and promotional materials. My enthusiasm knows no bounds when working in this field. I may even come for a visit!
Luxury Goods and Cosmetics
I can capture the very essence of your brand and its image. I have extensive experience in fashion, textiles, perfume, make-up and skin care.
After having worked as a language consultant with the DGAC in Paris for several years, I have a particular penchant for all things aviation!
At AMD Expression, I work with large, medium and small companies on a wide range of texts. I have a significant amount of knowledge on numerous regions and their local translation requirements. I believe I have the solution to your business translation needs.
