What could we possibly find that makes it worthwhile?
This island smells unhappy. The power is vast ancient--but wrong somehow. Nature can't be fooled. It's not like the mainland where the power is older and deeper. Here it's waning. Odder than a blue acorn.
A palpable aura of power emanates from the monument as you approach. You feel the energy dance across your skin.
Translation - Spanish Cuando llegamos, la isla parecía darnos la bienvenida. Ahora todo lo que veo es un cementerio interminable. Source text - English The emphasis on homeownership by the turn of the century was partly a vestige of when home was also work place on the farm in rural America. In the rising urban and craft union era to the early 1900s one’s home was where many workers produced pieces or services.
As factories rose in cities in the early decades of the 1900s housing needs for industrial workers skyrocketed. The working class in most urban areas lived in the central city, close to manufacturing.
In some areas, such as outside Chicago, company towns were established – here employers recaptured workers’ wages as rent. Company towns were more typical in rural agricultural and mining areas.
Industrial workers at the turn of the century faced deteriorating housing conditions; mass European immigration, and later, during WWI, mass-Black out migration from the south exacerbated housing needs in northern and Midwest cities.
Restrictive covenants limited housing mobility for minorities, enforcing de facto segregation. This meant white real-estate agents and homeowners had signed a contract forbidding them to sell homes to Blacks, Asians, Latinos, and Jews. Alien Land Laws were first adopted by California in 1913 and then in the 1920s and into WWII by other states including Arizona, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon, and Washington; These laws restricted immigrants who could not become citizens, primarily Chinese and other Asian immigrants, from land ownership or leases.
