Abstract
Influenza accounts for 3 to 5 million cases of severe illness and up to 300,000 deaths annually. Cardiovascular involvement in acute influenza infection can occur through direct effects of the virus on the myocardium or through exacerbation of existing cardiovascular disease. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated an association between influenza epidemics and cardiovascular mortality and a decrease in cardiovascular mortality in high risk patients has been demonstrated following vaccination with influenza vaccine. Influenza is a recognised cause of myocarditis which can lead to significant impairment of cardiac function and mortality. With recent concerns regarding another potential global pandemic of influenza the huge potential for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality is discussed.

Resumen
La gripe produce de 3 a 5 millones de casos de enfermedades graves y hasta 300 000 decesos anualmente. Las afecciones cardiovasculares de la infección por gripe aguda pueden producirse como un efecto directo del virus en el miocardio o a través de la exacerbación de enfermedades cardiovasculares existentes. Los estudios epidemiológicos demostraron una conexión entre la epidemia de la gripe y la mortalidad cardiovascular. Además, estos estudios revelaron una disminución de la mortalidad cardiovascular en pacientes de alto riesgo luego de la vacunación contra la gripe. La gripe es una causa reconocida de la miocarditis que puede conducir a una deficiencia significativa de la función cardíaca e incluso a la muerte. Existe una reciente preocupación sobre la posibilidad de otra pandemia global de gripe y se debate una alta probabilidad de mortalidad y morbilidad cardiovascular.
