Source text - Italian Si chiama Serinc5 ed è una proteina in grado di difendere naturalmente le cellule dal virus Hiv.
La scoperta è di un team di ricercatori dell'Università di Trento.
Gli studi effettuati - pubblicati sulla prestigiosa rivista Nature - hanno dimostrato che tale proteina, sinora sconosciuta, rappresenta una vera e propria barriera contro il virus che causa l'Aids, il quale, per attaccare le cellule, è costretto ad "aggirarla", producendo un'altra proteina, chiamata Nef.
Tra Serinc5 e Nef si innesca quindi una sorta di "battaglia".
"Nel momento in cui il virus inizia a replicarsi per disseminare l’infezione a tutto l’organismo, interviene Serinc5: attende che i nuovi virus escano dalla cellula per aggredirli e renderli incapaci di propagare l’infezione" spiega Massimo Pizzato, capo del gruppo di ricerca.
Che aggiunge: "Non sono ancora chiari i meccanismi con cui Nef e Serinc5 interagiscono tra loro, ma studiandoli si potrebbe aprire la porta a nuove strategie per combattere l’infezione, per esempio ricorrendo a farmaci capaci di evitare questa interazione e lasciare così a Serinc5 la possibilità di svolgere il suo ruolo difensivo fino in fondo".
Translation - English It's called Serinc5 and it's a protein naturally capable to defend cells from the Hiv virus.
The discovery comes from a researchers' team of the University of Trento.
The studies – published on the prestigious magazine Nature – reveal that such protein, unknown until the moment, represents a real barrier against the virus that causes Aids, which in order to attack cells is forced to “bypass it” producing another protein, called Nef.
Then a sort of “battle” starts between Serinc5 and Nef.
"When the virus starts replicating in order to disseminate the infection to the hole organism, Serinc5 intervenes: waits until the new viruses come out from the cell to attack them and make them unable to propagate the infection" explains Massimo Pizzato, chief of the research group.
He adds: "The interaction mechanisms between Nef and Serinc5 are still not clear, but studying them could open the way to new strategies to fight the infection, for example using medicines capable of avoiding this interaction and allowing Serinc5 the possibility to play it's defensive role to the end.”
