Source text - German MWC 2014: Telekom treibt unsichtbare IP-Revolution voran
24.02.2014
Translation - English MWC 2014: Below the radar Deutsche Telekom is precipitating an IP revolution
24/02/2014
▪ Targeting around eight million IP customer connections by end 2014.
▪ Testing LTE Advanced with speeds of up to 580Mbps.
▪ Introducing hybrid access router this year.
Deutsche Telekom has set itself the goal of achieving 8 million IP connections across its European network by the end of 2014. Claudia Nemat, member of the Management Board of Deutsche Telekom for Europe & Technology, and Niek Jan van Damme, Management Board member for Germany, presented the company's networks strategy at the Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona. Deutsche Telekom is making huge efforts in various European countries to transform its traditional fixed-line network into one based completely on Internet Protocol (IP). This is an important milestone for the Group in its bid to create a pan-European IP network that will integrate mobile communications and fixed-line network technology.
"The growth in bandwidth demand created by new mobile access technologies, machine-to-machine, and real-time applications, require us to take a holistic approach to our network. Only this way can we improve capacity, increase efficiency and provide the best possible customer experience", said Claudia Nemat. "Customers don't see network innovations, but they enjoy the benefits. It's a revolution as radical as the transition from horse and cart to the motor car."
In Germany, around 2.1 million customer connections have already been converted to IP. "In 2014, we want to more than double this number of connections - and without disrupting normal service", Niek Jan van Damme reported. "Our ambitious goal is to convert our entire German network to IP technology by the end of 2018. We are doing this to be able to offer our customers top class products, further improved customer service and significantly shorter time-to-market - all on a network with higher speeds and reduced latency". In the European business sector (excluding Germany) about. 2.7 million customer connections have been migrated to date.
Deutsche Telekom, together with its subsidiary Makedonski Telekom, has recently reached a significant milestone on the path towards a fully integrated IP network. Macedonia is the first European country to have its network totally migrated, with every single customer now being served by an IP connection. Towards the end of 2014 Slovakia will be next. Then Croatia and Montenegro follow in 2015, with Hungary the year after. It is also planned to have fully migrated Romania, Greece and Germany by the end of 2018.
A holistic network approach dictates that a high speed transport network must also include high speed access in the last mile. LTE is therefore playing an increasingly important role in next generation networks. By the end of 2013, Deutsche Telekom had commenced the introduction of LTE in almost all of its market countries. By 2016 it will be in a position to offer LTE to its customers at every second base station across Europe.
"We aren't just considering increased network coverage, we are also driving to substantially increase connection speeds. To this end we are conducting tests in Germany, as well as in other countries, to see how we can provide our LTE Advanced customers with the fastest possible data transfer speeds", says Claudia Nemat. "Our LTE roll-out in Germany has now reached the stage, where our customers in over 150 towns and cities can enjoy speeds of up to 150 megabits per second", added Niek Jan van Damme. 300 megabits per second (Mbps) is the next milestone. 580Mbps were even recorded by Deutsche Telekom last week in a test in the town of Alzey.
Furthermore, a hybrid router was unveiled by Deutsche Telekom at the MWC. "It represents our strategy like no other hardware product. Three technologies are combined in an unassuming "box": line connection, LTE and wi-fi. This guarantees a top quality experience. Our customers don't need to concern themselves with the access technology - they simply remain reliably connected on the optimal platform. Genuine plug 'n play - fast and secure", stated Niek Jan van Damme. The router is a smart mix of technologies. It bundles, concentrates and distributes bandwidth without customer involvement. By multiplexing existing bandwidths, customers can enjoy blistering new top speeds, which can't be achieved using dedicated stand alone variants. Market launch is towards the end of 2014.
