Spanish to English: The Illusion of Being Caribbean General field: Art/Literary
Source text - Spanish El grito cruzó desde el Caribe cubano, fotografiado en la carátula de un disco, hasta el frío del bogotrópico: “¡Pare… que llegó el Bárbaro!”. Lo decía Beny Moré, un mulato que extendía, como un pulpo musical, sus brazos y sus piernas en un carro donde también se encontraban el estuche de una guitarra y un par de congas. A su lado, un vendedor callejero caminaba y sonreía viendo la gracia del Bárbaro, y un semáforo encendía el brillo de su luz verde permitiendo el paso del carro al frente del Hotel Nacional en La Habana. La imagen sugería una promesa cumplida en la grabación donde el Bárbaro civilizado, que agregó la arquitectura de su voz para que la música cubana fuera un monumento bailable, cantaba “De la rumba al cha-cha-chá”, “Camarera del amor”, “Fiebre de ti”, “Soy campesino”, “Mi amor fugaz” y otros temas que hacían del vinilo, prensado por el sello Discuba, una joya de larga duración en la memoria.
Translation - English The shout by the Cuban Caribbean pictured on the cover of a disc crossed to the cold of the Bogotropical: “Stop...the Barbarian has arrived!” The shout was by Beny Moré, a mulatto, who like a musical squid, spread his arms and legs sitting in a car where also a guitar case and a pair of congas (Cuban drums) could be seen. A street vendor passed by and smiled, seeing the grace of the Barbarian, and a traffic light showed its glowing green light allowing the car to pass in front of the Hotel Nacional in Havana. The image made you think of a promise kept in the recording of the civilized Barbarian who added architecture to his voice in order to make Cuban music a danceable monument. He sang De la rumba al cha-cha-chá (From Rumba to Cha-cha-chá), Camarera del Amor (Waitress of Love), Fiebre de ti (Fever of you), Soy campesino (I'm a Peasant), Mi amor fugaz (My Fleeting Love) and other songs that were pressed on vinyl by the Discuba label, a gem of long-term memory.
