Source text - Italian Gillian: Negli Stati Uniti, dove mi sono trovata a completare la mia formazione, la danza ha sempre avuto un’importanza e un ruolo sociali.
D’altronde l’arte, ogni arte fa parte della vita, ed era naturale che la voce di alcuni coreografi in lotta contro le ingiustizie sociali e le persecuzioni razziali – come Anna Sokolow, creatrice di coreografie che stigmatizzavano l’Olocausto – si levasse in difesa delle vittime della storia e della società.
Una voce di protesta potente, perché riusciva a incapsulare nella danza la gioia, la rabbia, ogni sentimento umano. Quello in cui stava nascendo la modern dance è stato un periodo molto movimentato, pionieristico, con una pulsione al cambiamento portata avanti da danzatori animati dalla necessità di dire la loro con la danza, convinti che poteva essere il linguaggio per esprimere il disagio esistenziale e sociale.
La modern dance nasceva da questi presupposti, prima ancora che come fatto teatrale.
C’era poco pubblico all’inizio, ma c’erano energia e verità, ci si proponeva in maniera antiaccademica anche nell’aspetto, con abiti scuri e svolazzanti, chiome lunghe...
Era diverso anche il mettersi in rapporto con lo spazio, con la musica.
Translation - English Gillian: I continued my studies in America, where dance has always played an important role in society. Indeed art, all art is a part of life, thus the voices of choreographers struggling against social injustice and racial persecution – such as Anna Sokolow, the creator of choreographies which explored the Holocaust – naturally spoke out in defence of the victims of history and society.
Theirs was a powerful voice of protest because it captured every human emotion in dance, from joy to rage. The period that gave birth to modern dance was very lively and innovative – its drive towards change was led by dancers willing to have their say through the language of dance, believing it could express social and existential malaise.
Those principles led to the birth of modern dance, even before its appearance in theatres. There was little following at the beginning, but there was truth and energy – artists were anti-academic in their dance wear, appearing often in dark, floating costumes and flowing hair...
Due to their radical approach, even the relationship with space and music in their choreographies was different.
