Scholarships
Macquarie University has the most generous range of scholarships and travel grants in Australia. Scholarships are provided to international students on the basis of academic merit, and travel grants are also available to all students to support study abroad on exchange during their degree.

Pathways
If a student does not meet the academic or English requirements for direct entry to Macquarie University, they could be eligible to complete pathway studies at the Sydney Institute for Business and Technology (SIBT) or the National Centre for English Language Teaching and Research (NCELTR) first. Both are located on Macquarie’s campus.
The Sydney Institute for Business and Technology (SIBT) offers Foundation Studies (Pre-University), Higher Education Diplomas and Graduate Certificate programs. Upon successful completion of the SIBT Diploma students can directly enter second year of the relevant Bachelor degree (at either Macquarie University or Macquarie City). Diploma programs are offered in the areas of Business, Commerce, Computing, Communication and Arts. Students choose SIBT for its direct pathway to university, the small class sizes, fast track study options, additional student support and access to University facilities.

The National Centre for English Language Teaching and Research (NCELTR) offers discipline-specific direct entry English courses. NCELTR is recognised as a national and international leader in English language teaching. Taught by highly-qualified teachers, students develop communication skills to meet the demands of tertiary study. Students who pass NCELTR’s Direct Entry courses do no need to sit an IELTS or TOEFL examination before entering University.

Life on campus
Macquarie provides a campus environment that is active, supportive, safe and friendly, and has a real sense of community. Located in the leafy suburb of North Ryde, the campus provides the perfect environment for study – and only 30 minutes from Sydney Harbour.
Student support
The student services at Macquarie provide some of the best support for international students in Australia. The staff at International Student Services (ISS) are there to help students throughout their degree. They help students settle in during orientation, organise excursions and social activities, and provide advice on a wide range of issues, such as health cover, fees and personal welfare. All international students have access to advice from an ISS counsellor.
Students also have access to study skills training and careers advice throughout their degree.
Accommodation
Macquarie University has a dedicated Accommodation office to assist international students in finding accommodation. The University has a number of accommodation options for students, all located either on-campus, or within walking distance of campus (five to ten minutes walk):
Residential colleges (hostels). All meals are provided, and students have their own fully furnished rooms. There are two residential colleges on-campus at Macquarie.
Dunmore Lang College
Robert Menzies College
Apartments. All apartments are fully furnished, and students share their apartment with two to four other students. Each apartment has a full kitchen and laundry, so that students can self-cater. The apartments are located close to the campus and supermarkets.
The Accommodation office can also help organise airport reception and temporary accommodation for students when they first arrive, as well as help students find other private accommodation in Sydney.

Life in Sydney
Sydney is one of the most multicultural cities in the world. More than 25% of Sydney’s residents were born overseas, and a further 20% are the children of migrants. Sydneysiders come from 180 different nations and speak 140 different languages. Many of the world’s leading companies choose to locate their headquarters in Sydney.

Weather
Sydney has a temperate climate, meaning it is pleasant most of the year. Summer (December to February) temperatures are usually above 24°C (75°F). Winter (June to August) temperatures range from 10°C to 22°C (50°F to 72°F).
Working
On a student visa, students are permitted to work up to 20 hours a week during semester, and can work full time during break periods. Many Macquarie students find casual employment at the large shopping mall, Macquarie Centre, which is located adjacent to the campus. Jobs are also advertised online, by the University’s Career Hub. Students must be proactive in finding their own employment, but support services are available in the form of careers advice, and training on resume writing and interview skills.

Cost of living
The cost of living in Sydney remains relatively cheap compared to the USA, Britain, Western Europe and Japan. A student will generally need between AU$14,000 and AU$18,000 per year to cover living expenses (rent, food, transport and entertainment).

Religion and culture
There is complete freedom of religion in Australia. Most of the world religions are represented in Sydney and have their own places of worship. The majority of Australians are Christian, the three largest denominations being Anglican, Roman Catholic and Uniting Church. Other major religions with a great many adherents in Australia include Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Taoism.
There are a number of religious clubs on campus to cater for students of various faiths. Macquarie University also has a Muslim prayer room for all Muslim students.
