Translation - English July Edition! Mimikakishinagara-Oshaberi (Ear-Cleaning Chats)
Presenting ear-cleaning chat video number 5, the July version! Be sure to close your eyes and relax as you listen.
So far the videos I've uploaded in this series have only included voice audio without visuals, but I've heard many express their opinion that it's much better to include visuals, so from now on I will try to do so as much as possible when giving my ear-cleaning chats.
So, I know that I just told you to close your eyes, but for this special occasion you may keep them open.
In any case, I need you to be relaxed as you listen, alright?
Here's what we'll be using to make the ear-cleaning sound this time! A cork and earpick.
I'll be up close to your ears scratching a cork coaster with an earpick.
Alright, so I'm going to start cleaning from your right ear.
Okay, let's start!
Ah, summer already!
Are you taking care of yourself on these hot days we've been having? Are you doing okay?
I'm not straining myself, but ever since I was young I've had weak, sensitive skin, so right now the UV rays are killing me.
When I get sunburned, my skin gets bright red and really itchy, so I can't live without sunblock.
As someone who has to use sunblock not only during the summer but throughout the entire year, during this season I have to constantly reapply because it's so hot and I sweat it all off. It's sort of a pain.
According to this one TV show I saw recently, though, apparently over-applying sunblock is bad for you, too.
When you apply sunblock, evidently it causes your body's natural vitamin D-producing functions to weaken.
The show explained that vitamin D is usually compensated for in your body as you are exposed to sunlight, but when you apply a strong sunblock to your skin, it lowers your ability to absorb that vitamin D by about 95%.
So you really need to be careful not to over-apply.
Still, once when I was at the hospital a doctor of dermatology and medicine ordered me to thoroughly coat myself with sunblock.
On that day they gave me a full sample bottle of sunblock, so it doesn't seem like applying sunblock is a bad thing in itself.
There is a range of conflicting information out there, so it's a bit confusing to decide what is best for your own body.
Incidentally, it seems that you can supplement your vitamin D intake with fish, egg yolks, cheese, etc.
People who apply sunblock (myself included) will really want to gain the proper nutrition from these types of foods.
Speaking of sunblock, have you ever had tan lines before?
This year I'm really being careful to avoid getting sunburnt.
And yet, because I wear a watch everyday, I'm already seeing a faint tan line where my watch sits...so I need to watch out.
This was about two years ago, but one time I developed a distinct net-like pattern on my feet from wearing sandals.
At that time I had a favorite pair of lace-up sandals with straps around the ankle and a net-like material at the top.
Because they were so comfortable and easy to walk in, I wore them all the time, but when summer came to an end, to my dismay I discovered a neat little lace pattern imprinted onto the top of my foot...
Since taking off my shoes one by one is such a hassle, my sunburn prevention strategy consisted of lightly applying spray-type sunblock on top of my sandals, but even that became quite a hassle, so I wasn't exactly enthusiastic in my sunblock application, and my feet acquired some noticeable burns.
Even worse, those tan lines lingered faintly all the way until the end of winter.
I was so embarrassed that, when wearing pumps, I would avoid socks that left the top of my feet visible and instead wore stockings to whole time.
Letting people see lace-shaped tan lines is just too embarrassing.
The fall and winter seasons after that one summer were pretty cold, so it wasn't much of an issue to wear stockings so much, but I promised myself that next year I would be more careful.
Be careful that you don't get any weird or embarrassing tan lines yourself, okay?
I'll be careful too, of course.
Um...But then again, I already have a watch tan line (laughs bitterly).
By the way, I've heard that, when you submerge suntans in a bath and accelerate your circulation and skin metabolism, it makes the healing process quicker.
It's also important to moisturize consistently.
Moisturize not just your face and neck, but also your whole body.
People often say that it's good to moisturize using aloe lotions gels.
I have a friend who cuts aloe leaves and lathers their body directly with aloe extract.
Her skin is always amazingly beautiful, so I guess aloe must really have the power to invigorate skin.
Still, it seems that if those with weak skin apply aloe directly to their skin, it starts to redden and sting, so instead of using an undiluted aloe solution, you should use some kind of watered down lotion or something.
I've never tried aloe lotion or gel myself, so if I happen to get burnt to a crisp this summer, I think I'll try using some kind of aloe product.
Do you have any recommendations when it comes to preventing sunblock or dealing with tan lines?
I've really gotten sucked into the topic of sunburns, huh?
Alright then, now I'm going to do the finishing touches with the bonten (fluffy earpick).
Alright, your right ear should be clean now.
So now let's move on the next one. The left ear! Please turn your left ear upward.
This is our July version video, so let's have a July-specific discussion, shall we?
When you think of July, you think of the beachgoing season starting up.
Have you gone to the beach? I, of course...have not! (laughs)
But I really want to.
I want to go to a beautiful beach somewhere and see the beautiful ocean.
Like Okinawa or somewhere like that.
What other places are well known? Shizuoka Prefecture? Izu's coast is great though, isn't it?。
I want to go to one of Izu's onsens. I want to stay in one of those ocean view inns.
Aside from that, there's Jodogahama in Iwate Prefecture... And that pure white beach in Wakayama Prefecture is also lovely, right? What was the name? Shirarahama?
The name has a really cute ring to it, so that's why I remember it.
I've seen it before in pictures. That white beach is really spectacular.
There are also a lot of beautiful beaches in Kyushu.
In Miyazaki, Kagoshima, Nagasaki...they're everywhere!
If I'm going to the ocean, then the first thing I wan to do is cut up a watermelon.
Man, I really want to eat watermelon! I still haven't at all this year.
I've done parasailing in the ocean once, which is where you are attached to a parachute and fly into the air as you are pulled along by a boat. That was super fun.
At the time I had gotten sea sick while riding on the boat, felt horrible, and was on the verge of throwing up, but once the wind was blowing against me in midair and I saw the ocean stretching out endlessly in every direction, I felt so much better.
I strongly recommend this for people who can't handle marine sports that entail violent swaying, like banana boarding.
I went during the summer. The cool sea breeze felt absolutely fantastic.
I recommend this for people who aren't bad with heights.
Speaking of oceans, on July 19th we had the Marine Day national holiday, right?
How did you spend your three-day vacation?
I said on Twitter that I would be busy during July, but the truth is, I spent the three-day holiday traveling.
Sorry! In reality, I was busy enjoying myself...(laughs)
No, but of course I was busy attending to a variety of other matters...But in the midst of my busy schedule I did spend some time refreshing myself and having fun.
During July my video updates sort of stagnated to the point where some people were even asking if something had happened to me and expressed worry over my health, so I do feel a little sorry for spending that time traveling.
I am in perfect health, thanks to all of you.
Thank you so much for all of your concern.
On that note, before Marine Day we had the Tanabata holiday!
July 7th. Did you write your wish on a tanzaku card?
During the Tanabata season there are little bamboo plants decorating the insides of stores, buildings, and schools, and there are tanzaku cards next to them where you can write whatever you want.
I prefer looking at what other people have written on tanzaku already attached to the bamboo plant over writing my own wish on one.
Is that in bad taste? (laughs)
Young children have very grand and charming wishes, and it's not only small children but also older ones and even adults who sometimes write very humorous wishes, so it's quite entertaining.
I've written a wish myself a few times, but I played it safe and
just wrote "I want to win the lottery!"
Yeah... Well, in my entire life I haven't once bought a lottery ticket, so there's really no chance of that happening, huh? (laughs)
And even though I don't ever buy any, I think to myself "I wonder if I could actually win..." every time I see a lottery commercial.
It’s also fun to fantasize about what you would do if you won, isn’t it?
I think the Summer Jumbo Lottery is going on right about now. Have you bought a ticket?
For the sake of those who have, go ahead and wish for lottery winnings, okay? “I wish they could win the lottery!” (laughs)
When I’m writing a wish on a tanzaku, I’m usually with a friend or family member, and because writing a serious wish in front of them is a bit embarrassing, I always kind of make a joke of it.
What kind of wish did you make?
I hope your wish comes true.
I’m wishing for your wish to come true.
Now, listen up-- July happens to be my birthday month!
I don’t remember when it was, but apparently a while ago I mentioned that July is my birthday month in a video or on Twitter or something.
So now that it’s July I’ve received lots of comments on Twitter and my videos wishing me a happy birthday from viewers who had the courtesy to remember that, and it’s made me so happy!
To be honest, I feel like ever since I passed the age of 20 I’ve been at the point where I don’t want to get any older, but being celebrated is truly wonderful no matter what age you are.
A sincere thank you to all of you who wrote messages!
Now that we’re on this subject, I’m sure you’re getting curious about my age.
But this is what I always say: I’m permanently 17! (laughs)
If I’m 17, then could it be that I’m still a high school student?

4. Concept
~Kyobashi Modern, bringing a sublime image of the style of Edo into the modern era~
As a well-established bridge rivaling even the famous Nihonbashi, in the past Kyobashi maintained a significant reputation as the first bridge to cross the highway stretching from Nihonbashi towards Kyoto on the Tokaido.
Shirohige Utagawa’s woodblock print painting Bamboo Quay by Kyobashi Bridge from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo was created as a symbol of this status.
In reverence of this history and culture, Mitsui Garden Hotel Kyobashi has striven to express Edo culture and the history of Kyobashi in a modern way throughout the hotel in its design of the Kyobashi Modern concept.
Bamboo Quay by Kyobashi Bridge from One Hundred Famous Views of Edo by Shirohige Utagawa
The exterior has a sharp, straight-line design reminiscent of the riverside bamboo depicted in the woodblock print painting Bamboo Quay by Kyōbashi Bridge.
The first floor entrance incorporates a host of modern Japanese elements throughout as part of the connection between the culture of Kyobashi and the “Edo style” concept, such as stone walls with black and white checkerboard motifs and stone paths evocative of the nobedan of Japanese gardens. Amidst the distinctly business-centered streets of modern Kyobashi, these truly bring to mind the bustling image of the Kyobashi of old Edo, back when it was teeming with merchants.
Also be sure to take a moment to admire the bronze glass design of the elevator hall’s checkerboard wallpaper, as well as the cedar board ceiling.
The interior of our hotel embodies a simple and modern interpretation of the style of old Edo, selecting the following core elements of the “Kyobashi Modern” concept: life, comfort, and Japan.
Our rooms exhibit a design based around a rosewood color scheme and founded on the simple yet refined culture of the Edo masses.
This creates an impressive space in which both foreign tourists and tourists from within Japan will have no trouble relaxing.
In the past, a pastime known as hanjie (picture puzzles) was popular throughout Edo. It is a game where you look at a painting and try to determine what it means.
As an homage to the culture of the common people of old Edo, on the headboard of each room we have represented the words “Kyobashi” and “have a great trip” using the characters for “bridge,” “horse,” “trip,” and “tail.”
Lance (shogi)
Kyobashi
Have a great trip
5. Facility & Service
Our facility is built around the concept of combining the past and present of Kyobashi into a single scenery that transcends time. We have built a fresh new lobby lounge-type space which exemplifies in new ways Kyobashi’s long-established role as a place that brings travelers together and unifies the culture of Tokyo, thus connecting us to the future.
