Source text - Italian Greve in Chianti è la capitale del Chianti Classico fiorentino. Il Chianti Classico è composto da otto comuni in totale, di cui quattro sono in provincia di Firenze (Tavarnelle, San Casciano Val di Pesa e Barberino Val d’Elsa e Greve in Chianti) e quattro in provincia di Siena (Castelnuovo Berardenga, Gaiole in Chianti, Radda in Chianti e Castellina in Chianti.
Greve, situata a pochi chilometri da Firenze e circondata dalle splendide colline del Chianti fiorentino, dove a è tutto un rincorrersi di vigne, olivi, cipressi e casali di pietra, offre ai suoi visitatori la bella piazza Matteotti. La piazza di forma irregolare che ospita il palazzo comunale, la chiesa di Santa Croce, oltre alla statua di Amerigo Vespucci e alla splendida scultura di Igor Mitoraj, si caratterizza per essere circondata da bei portici che ospitano molte botteghe, bar e trattorie. Tra questi, l’Antica Macelleria Falorni, luogo ricco di prelibatezze ma anche di grande charme e tradizione.
La piazza inoltre ospita, tutti i sabati, un grande mercato, dove è possibile acquistare sia alimenti che abbigliamento e oggettistica.
Il territorio del comune di Greve è naturalmente ricco di fattorie che spesso ruotano intorno a Castelli o antichi borghi, dove si produce il famoso Chianti e il pregiatissimo olio. Spesso all’interno di queste fattorie si trovano trattorie, o punti di ristoro è comunque possibile fare wine-tasting e olive oil tasting, oltre alla visita, di norma molto suggestiva delle loro cantine.
A pochi chilometri dal centro di Greve si trova Montefioralle. Un piccolo splendido borgo fortificato, posto in posizione panoramica. Il borgo è molto ben conservato e vale una breve visita. Ospita la casa natale di Amerigo Vespucci, riconoscibile per lo stemma con la vespa, sopra il portone d’ingresso.
Poco distante da Montefioralle si trova la bella chiesa di San Cresci, databile ai primi anni del XII secolo, la cui splendida facciata la rende una chiesa molto rara nell’ambito dell’architettura romanica in Toscana.
Panzano in Chianti, già abitata in epoca etrusca, è la frazione più importante del comune di Greve. Nella parte alta del paese si trova il castello, risalente al XII secolo e l’antico borgo, che si sviluppava lungo la strada d’accesso al castello, sul crinale della collina. Sempre in Panzano Alta, si trova la chiesa di Santa Maria, risalente ad epoca rinascimentale, caratterizzata da una bella e scenografica scalinata, sempre adornata da fioriture di stagione.
L’attrazione principale degli ultimi anni di Panzano è però, senza dubbio, la macelleria di Dario Cecchini. Il macellaio, diventato famoso per il funerale alla “fiorentina”, e per la sua spiccata personalità, che lo ha portato a partecipare a tante trasmissioni televisive, nella sua Panzano ha davvero costruito il suo feudo, diventato, negli anni, luogo di grande attrazione e vera e propria meta del turismo gourmand.
La sua macelleria, dove vende non solo le famose bistecche, ma ogni altro tipo di carne, ed altri prodotti di sua creazione, vale senz’altro una visita. Soprattutto se passate di li la domenica mattina, in occasione del mercato settimanale che si svolge a Panzano, la bottega di Dario Cecchini diventa un vero e proprio luogo d’incontro, dove è possibile assaggiare alcuni dei suoi prodotti che, il macellaio offre, insieme un bicchiere di vino rosso.
Sempre nelle vicinanze di Greve, seppur nel territorio del comune di Tavarnelle, da segnalare, la splendida Badia a Passignano, la cui costruzione risale al 1200. Bella la Badia e splendido il contesto paesaggistico in cui si trova, tra le vigne in cui Casa Antinori produce vini importanti.
Per gli amanti del golf, Greve in Chianti offre a soli 20 minuti di distanza il prestigioso campo da 18 buche dell’Ugolino, che, in passato, ha ospitato anche l’OPEN d’Italia maschile.
Greve, come tutto il territorio del Chianti, è inoltre un territorio magnifico da esplorare per chi ama vivere la propria vacanza, andando in bicicletta, sia su strada che in mountain bike. Strade e percorsi che si sviluppano tra dolci colline, passando in mezzo a vigne, boschi, viali di cipressi, ville, fattorie, castelli e antichi borghi, dove sostare e magari godersi i salumi e i formaggi locali, insieme a un bel bicchiere di vino.

Translation - English Greve in Chianti is the main town of Florence’s Chianti Classico area. Chianti Classico is made

Greve, a few kilometres from Florence and surrounded by the splendid hills of the Chianti area

for producing Chianti wine and select olive oil. Many of these farms have restaurants or a way to
taste the wine and oil, as well as visits to the wine cellars.
Just a few kilometres from Greve is the town of Montefioralle, a small but beautiful hamlet in a
panoramic position. The hamlet is very well-kept and is definitely worth a visit. Here you will find
the birthplace of Amerigo Vespucci, marked with the wasp emblem over the entrance.
Not far from Montefioralle, you will find the beautiful church of San Cresci, dating back to the
12th Century, with a splendid facade which makes it a precious example of Romanesque
architecture in Tuscany.
Panzano in Chianti, already inhabited in Etruscan times, is the most important town in the
municipality of Greve. The high part of the village has a castle from the 12th Century and an
ancient hamlet, which followed the entrance to the castle, on the hillside. Panzano Alta also has
the church of Santa Maria, dating back to the Renaissance era, with a breathtaking stairway,
embellished with flowers.
The main attraction of Panzano in the last years has been Dario Cecchini’s butcher’s. The
butcher is famous for his “florentine funeral” and for his strong personality, which has led him to
be a successful TV personality and has helped to make Panzano a famous attraction.
The butcher’s is definitely worth a visit, with prized fiorentina steaks and other types of meat, as
well as unique products. If you happen to go during the Sunday market, the butcher’s becomes
a genuine meeting place, with product tastings paired with a good red wine.
Still near Greve but in the Tavarnelle municipality, you will find Badia di Passignano, a splendid
abbey from the 13th Century. The abbey and surrounding landscape are breathtaking, with
important vineyards such as Casa Antinori all around.
Golf lovers must visit the 18-hole course at Ugolino, just 20 minutes away, which has also
hosted the male Italian Open tournament.
Greve, like the rest of Chianti, is a magnificent territory which can also be explored on road or
mountain bike. You will find roads and trails through sweeping hills with vineyards, woods,
cypress trees, villas, farms, castles and hamlets all around where you can stop for great local
cold cuts or cheese with a glass of good wine.

Source text - Italian Una giornalista Annalisa Coppolaro, un archeologo Anthony
Tuck e un fotografo Göran Söderberg hanno deciso di narrarci
una storia, ognuno con gli strumenti del proprio mestiere. Il
racconto si muove su due piani: da un lato le vicende di una
comunità etrusca cancellata nei decenni finali del VI secolo a.C.,
dall’altro l’avventura della sua riscoperta.
Dal libro – pagina dopo pagina - emerge un insediamento
etrusco, riunito intorno a un palazzo, dove la vita era governata
da una gens, una famiglia aristocratica, che era arrivata a
esercitare un controllo su un’area ampia sino a quando non si
scontrò con la polis, la città-stato, di Chiusi e, più in generale,
con i nuovi assetti che si erano venuti a creare in Etruria.
Il suo benessere era stato assicurato dal trovarsi lungo
l’itinerario che collegava la Val di Chiana coi centri etruschi di
Roselle e Vetulonia, quindi l’Etruria interna con la costa
tirrenica, e dallo sfruttamento delle vicine miniere di Casenovole
e Poggio Abbù.
Ci si soffermi sulle lastre architettoniche che ornavano il
palazzo: banchetti, corse di cavalli, assemblee, processioni,
cortei nuziali, scene di tessitura e di canto al suono della cetra.
Tali immagini – nel loro insieme - sembrano volerci parlare di
un equilibrio raggiunto tra la sfera umana e quella divina, tra chi
governava e chi era sottoposto, tra chi consumava e chi
produceva per le necessità della corte in un mondo che si rivelò
all’improvviso troppo piccolo e angusto.
Una situazione che si ritrova in diverse occasioni nella storia
italiana: si pensi ai Comuni medievali o alle corti rinascimentali,
al loro splendore, alla loro vitalità culturale e poi al loro
infrangersi quasi improvviso nell’impatto con un mondo nuovo
a cui non seppero adattarsi e a cui forse strutturalmente non
potevano aprirsi.
L’altra parte del racconto non è meno interessante: i protagonisti
diventano archeologi, storici dell’arte antica, genetisti, poi
alcuni amministratori locali, quindi gli abitanti di Murlo. Sono
tutti loro che hanno voluto e saputo riportare alla luce le vestigia
di epoca etrusca e, attraverso i resti materiali ricuperati, le
abitudini di vita, le scelte, la religiosità, il gusto, la laboriosità, la
fatica, la sofferenza, la gioia di uomini e donne che avevano
vissuto tra gli stessi benigni orizzonti.
Terminata la lettura del libro, si ha la sensazione che un filo –
ininterrotto, quasi inspiegabilmente – leghi i ricordi lontani a
quelli più recenti in un’unità dove il tempo sembra non avere
valore, o, almeno, non tutto quello che siamo portati ad
attribuirgli.

Translation - English Journalist Annalisa Coppolaro, archaeologist Anthony Tuck and photographer Goran Soderberg
have decided to tell us a story, each using the tools of their own profession. The story moves on
two fronts: the events revolving around an ancient Etruscan community which was destroyed
towards the end of the 6th Century B.C. and the adventure of its rediscovery.
Page after page, the book tells about an Etruscan settlement, revolving around a palace,
governed by an aristocratic family or gens which had gradually come to assert control over a
large area, until it fought with the polis that was Chiusi and with the other new forces taking hold
of Etruria.
The community owed its well-being to its strategic position between the Val di Chiana and the
Etruscan settlements of Roselle and Vetulonia, as well as between Etruria’s inland and the
Tyrrhenian coast, along with the resources of the nearby mines of Casenovole and Poggio
Abbu’.
Think of the atmosphere which would have been in the palace: a flurry of banquets, horse
races, meetings, processions, wedding parades, all amongst weavers, singers and cithara
players. These images suggest a perfect balance between the human and divine spheres,
between the governors and the governed, between the consumers and the producers of the
court, in a haven which abruptly revealed itself to be too small and restricted for its time.
This situation recurs frequently in Italy’s history: the mind springs to the Medieval Comuni, or
Italian Renaissance courts with their splendour and cultural fervor, destroyed all of a sudden by
the impact of a new world which they were not prepared for and couldn’t adapt to.
The other side of the story is just as interesting: the main characters gradually turn into
archaeologists, historians, geneticists, then local administrators and the current inhabitants of
Murlo. All these people have chosen to recall the glorious Etruscan period and, through
archeological findings, the Etruscan habits, choices, religiousness, taste, work ethic, suffering
and joy of all the men and women who lived in the same nurturing land.
After reading this book, it is impossible to avoid seeing the thread which links ancient memory to
more recent times, in a unity in which time seems not to have value - or at least, not the value
we tend to give it.
