A PHOTOGRAPHIC PILGRIMAGE
INTRODUCTION
IN HOLY LANDS
This is a book about places that once were as much as it is about places that are. It is about what the world might have looked like when astonishing events were happening. When Adam and Eve went walking in Eden. When Moses climbed to the summit of Mount Sinai. When Christ was born. When there was a storm on the Sea of Galilee. When Jesus strode on water.
It is then, a book about the past. There are no photographs herein depicting the daily strife of modern-day Baghdad, or the volatile situation in Gaza and the West Bank. Except for an occasional inescapable allusion in the text – a violent 2002 siege at the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, for example – there is no mention of current events (events that may, after all, come to take far different shapes a year or even six months from now). To take this even a step further, Places of the Bible is about several places that no longer exist under their biblical names. When Abraham made his epic journey, he went forth from his native Mesopotamia into Canaan. Today we would say that he left Iraq and made his way to Israel and Lebanon.
Remarkably, however, all these many centuries later, the biblical sites seen herein look much as they did in antiquity, and therefore can be rendered photographically. Yes, certainly, several of them must be viewed from a certain perspective, one that ignores a city’s choked downtown in favor of its undeveloped outskirts. And in many cases a ruin represents a once-magnificent house of worship that now can only be imagined. Then too, the Bible regularly lacks geographic specificity. Which route did the Exodus take across the Sinai? Which is the Galilean mountain of Jesus’s Sermon on the Mount? Archaeologists, historians and religiously faithful have speculated about these answers throughout history, and our book presents, pictorially, that speculation – noting when doing so that we simply cannot know for sure.
If this is, as stated, a book of the past, it is also a book very much about the world today, and about what matters to that world. This is because Places of the Bible is, at bottom, a book about a book: a still vibrant, still essential book – a book with eternal relevance to human history and thought.

یہ کتاب ہمیں ان مقامات کے بارے میں بتاتی ہے جو نہ صرف ماضی میں موجود تھے بلکہ آج بھی ہیں۔ یہ کتاب اس وقت کی دنیا کی منظر کشی کرتی ہے جب عقل کو دنگ کر دینے والے انتہائ حیران کن واقعات جنم لے رہے تھے۔ جب حضرت آدم اور اماں حوا جنت کے دلفریب باغوں میں چہل قدمی کیا کرتے تھے۔ جب حضرت موسیٰ کوہ سینا کی چوٹی پر گئے۔ جب حضرت عیسیٰ اس دنیا میں تشریف لائے۔ جب اسرائیل کی ایک جھیل " سی آف گلیلی " میں ایک زبردست طوفان آیا۔ اور جب حضرت عیسیٰ اپنے پیروکاروں کوبچانے کے لئے اس طوفان کی بپھری ہوئی لہروں پر چلے۔
اس کتاب کا تعلق گذشتہ زمانوں سے ہے۔ اس میں دور جدید کے بغداد کی روزمرہ کی کشمکش یا غزہ اور مغربی کنارے کی تیزی سے بدلتی ہوئی آج کی تشویش ناک صورتحال کی منظر نگاری نہیں ہے۔ [اس کتاب میں 2002 میں بیت اللحم میں حضرت عیسیٰ کی "پیدائش کے گرجے" کے پرتشدد محاصرے کے انتہائی لازمی لیکن سرسری ذکر کے علاوہ ان موجودہ واقعات کا کوئ تذکرہ نہیں ملتا۔ جو ایک سال یا شاید چھ ماہ بعد ہی بہت مختلف شکل میں ہمارے سامنے آئیں]۔ اس سے صرف نظر کرتے ہوئے "بائیبل کے مقامات" ایسے کئی مقامات کے بارے میں ہے۔ جو آج بھی اس دنیا میں موجود تو ہیں مگر ان ناموں کے ساتھ نہیں جن سے ان کا ذکر بائیبل میں کیا گیا ہے۔ مثلاََ کتاب میں مذکور حضرت ابراہیم کے اپنے آبائی علاقے میسوپوٹیمیا سے کنعان کی جانب طویل سفر کو آج ہم عراق سے
اسرائیل اور لبنان تک کا سفر کہہ سکتے ہیں۔
تاہم بائیبل میں ذکر کئے گئے کئی مقامات اتنی صدیوں کے بعد آج بھی حیران کن طور پر اپنے قدیم دور کی طرح ہی نظر آتے ہیں جن کی عکاسی تصویروں میں کی جا سکتی ہے۔ لیکن ان میں سے کئی مقامات کو ایک مخصوص زاویہ نظر سے دیکھنے کی ضرورت ہے۔ ایسی نظر جو شہر کے پُر ہجوم اندرونی حصوں کو نظر انداز کرتے ہوئے اس کے پس ماندہ مضافات کو ترجیح دے۔ اور کئی موقعوں پرچشم تصور سے دیکھیں تو ایک ویران کھنڈر آپ کواپنے وقت کی عظیم الشان عبادت گاہ دکھائی دے گا۔ بائیبل میں جغرافیائ تفصیلات کا ذکر کم کیا گیا ہے۔ مثلاََ بنی اسرائیل نے فرعون سے نجات کے لئے ہجرت کرتے ہوئے صحرائے سینا میں کون سا راستہ اختیار کیا تھا؟ یا حضرت عیسیٰ نے گلیلی کے کون سے پہاڑ پر اپنا "پہاڑ کا خطبہ" دیا تھا؟ تاریخ میں ماہرین آثار قدیمہ، مورخین اور مذہبی پیروکاروں نے ان سوالوں کے جواب تلاش کرنے کے لئے ہمیشہ قیاس آرائیاں کی ہیں۔ ہماری یہ کتاب ان قیاس آرائیوں کو ایک تصویری شکل میں پیش کرتی ہے۔ لیکن خیال رہے کہ ہم اس کو حتمی طور
پر درست قرار نہیں دے سکتے۔
لیکن جیسا کہ اسے کہا جاتا ہے ، یہ کتاب صرف گذشتہ زمانوں کی کتاب ہی نہیں ہے۔ بلکہ موجودہ دور اور آج کی دنیا کے اہم تقاضوں سے بھی اس کا گہرا تعلق ہے۔ اور ایسا اس لئے ہے کہ "بائیبل کے مقامات" بنیادی طور پر اس کتاب کے متعلق ایک کتاب ہے جو آج بھی زندہ اور متحرک ہے۔ جو آج بھی انتہائی اہمیت کی حامل ہے۔ ایک ایسی کتاب جس کا انسانی سوچ اور تاریخ سے دائمی رشتہ ہے۔
