English to Norwegian (Bokmal): Right Ear Advantage General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Linguistics
Source text - English Dichotic listening experiments have shown hemispherical specialization, where linguistic processing takes place in the left brain-hemisphere. This specialization combined with the brain processing information from the contralateral side, leads to the phenomenon REA. Sounds entering the right ear reaches the linguistically favored hemisphere before sounds entering the left ear. REA applies to both speech and morse code input, as well as speech-like stimuli.
Different dichotic listening experiments have been done with different stimuli to test at what processing level REA occur. They have showed that REA is not associated with auditory processing in itself, as musical stimuli show a left ear advantage. The fact that morse code show REA proves that REA is not phonetic. Tests have also showed that REA is not an automatic peripheral effect, and can be enhanced of decreased with priming.
