Source text - English When different crops are grown on the same land, pests and diseases are less likely to damage crops.
Some plants can even ward off pests by sending special chemical signals into the air. Other plants pull pests away and these two plant types can be used in combination to push pests away from crops and attract them elsewhere.
For example, stemborer caterpillars in eastern and southern Africa cause maize yield reductions of up to 80% but, if you plant Napier grass nearby, the moths are pulled away from the maize because they prefer to lay their eggs on the Napier.

Pull
A different plant called Silverleaf desmodium produces special chemicals that push the moths away. If they’re planted right next to the maize, the moths will be pushed away from the crop too. Desmodium also protects crops from parasitic weeds so it provides double protection!

Push
When used together, these Napier and Desmodium create a strong “push-pull” defence, protecting the maize against both insects and weeds without needing to use any pesticides or weed killer.
