Source text - English Within a few years of the introduction of fMRI, a novel approach to data analysis was developed that is widely termed functional connectivity or fcMRI (Biswal, Yetkin, Haughton, & Hyde, 1995). Functional connectivity analysis involves computing correlations (or covariance) in BOLD signal between different brain areas. This can be contrasted with the approach of correlating BOLD signal with an independently specified reference time series determined by the timing of some external event such as stimulus presentation or motor responses. It is important to note that in this context the word ‘connectivity’ does not mean structural connectivity – direct axonal (white matter) connections between brain areas (but see Chapter 10). A correlation in BOLD signal implies some synchronization of activity or other interaction between the correlated areas, but – critically – this could be modulated either by direct structural connectivity, indirect connectivity through one or more intervening brain regions, or the influence of another brain region sending signals to the two functionally connected brain areas – or even a chance correlation between two brain areas whose activity is not truly correlated. These caveats notwithstanding, this technique provides a potentially very powerful way of understanding brain activity using fMRI (and other techniques; functional connectivity analyses can be performed using MEG, EEG, and optical imaging data as well). While standard task-related fMRI analysis approaches can identify a set of brain regions activated during a particular task, fcMRI can provide insight into how these areas interact as coherent networks, rather than a set of isolated areas. In this way, functional connectivity is one way to move the discipline of fMRI beyond ‘neo-phrenology’ towards understanding the brain as a network – or a set of networks.

Source text - English A copy of the film and the dialogue list, and/or a file with the master titles, are then forwarded to the translator, although it is not uncommon in the profession for subtitlers to have to work without access to the images, or directly from the soundtrack without a copy of the written dialogue. The reasons are manifold, from fear that illegal copies might be made to a sheer lack of time because the distribution company wants the translation to be underway while the film is still being edited, so that the date of the movie’s premiere can be met, for instance. Before digitization, audiovisual programmes were sent to the translators on a VHS cassette, but these days the file transfer protocol (FTP) is the standard used for the transfer of files and videos between a client and server on a computer network. The most common video file formats in the industry used to be .avi and .mpeg, which are still in use, but these days formats like .wmv, .mov and .mp4 are preferred for storing digital video. When working in the cloud, subtitlers do not need to download any materials as they are securely stored on the vendor’s platform (Chapter 9).

Source text - English I thought, when I was young, that you worked according to your nationality. We were Spanish, and my father, grandfather. And uncles were all in the cigar business. There was a definite rule about this, I believed a law. I thought so particularly during those times when I listened to my father and the other men of our family talk business, and heard them complain bitterly about the cigar business and about what a dishonorable trade it was, and how they were cursed the moment they took it up. This used to surprise me especially in regard to my father, because on the rare visits to his store it had seemed like a wonderful place. It had a broad, rich-looking nickel-plated counter, neatly stacked with bright-colored boxes of cigars, and with shining hookahs and lighters along its top. The floor was white tile, and the inside wall of the store was a great mirror. The customers I’d seen had been well-dressed men with booming voices, rich gold chains around their full stomachs, and canes and gloves in their hands. There had been an air of wealth and strength in that store as I remembered it.
