ONE – What is the assurance of salvation?
It is to have the conviction that you have received the eternal salvation; you know that you will be in heaven at the moment you pass away.
TWO – How do we obtain the assurance of salvation?
Because salvation entirely belongs to God, we need to satisfy the conditions He requires to achieve it - the only condition God asks is to believe in Jesus Christ as the Savior of my soul. In other words, we obtain salvation through our faith in Christ.
On what ground, however, do we know that we are saved through our faith in Jesus Christ? It is through the Word of God that we see the validity of the statement. We can obtain the conviction in salvation by trusting in God’s Word. What does God promise in regards to salvation?
• John 10:28-29
I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.
• 1John 5:13
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.
Both Jesus and God the Father said no one can snatch us out of their hands. Therefore, our salvation stands on a firm foundation. Almighty and living God promises us the salvation, which is as absolute as God himself.
< SHARING TIME >
• At this time, let us read out loud God’s promising words for our salvation. Have some times to meditate on them. These powerful passages will hold our souls tightly fastened to God.
THREE – What are other evidences that support our assurance in salvation?
First - fulfilled prophesies in coming of Jesus Christ as our Savior in the Bible
Genesis 3:15 Christ comes as an offspring of woman
Genesis 49:10 Christ comes from the line of Judah
Numbers 24:17-19 Christ is born in Israel
Deuteronomy 18:15 He comes as a prophet like Moses
Isaiah 7:14 He is born through a virgin
Isaiah 9:6, 7 Prophesy of a baby’s birth
Isaiah 11:1 He comes from the line of Jesse
Isaiah 53:4-6 Christ in His suffering
Isaiah 53:9 His grave is owned by a Rich
Daniel 9:26 Christ will be killed
Hosea 11:1 He will spend His childhood in Egypt
Micah 5:2 Christ’s birth in Bethlehem
Zechariah 9:9 He humbly enters Jerusalem riding on a donkey.
Zechariah 11:12 He is sold for thirty silver coins
Psalms 16:10 He is resurrected from the dead (the Holy One doesn’t decay)
Psalms 22:1 Christ is abandoned
Psalms 22:18 His garment is divided and casted lots
Psalms 34:20 No bone is broken (after His death)
Psalms 41:10 Christ is betrayed
Psalms 68:18 Christ ascends to heaven
Psalms 69:21 He drinks gall mixed in vinegar
Jesus Christ came according to God’s Word, fulfilled all the prophesies written in scriptures, and ascended to heaven. Throughout the world, could there be another preacher or founder of religion who can fulfill the prophesies from thousands of years ago? Our salvation is only possible because God planned and accomplished it before the creation of the world.
Second - the fulfillment of prophesies in the historical context
Bible accurately predicts the events such as establishment and collapse of Egyptian, Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, Greek, and Roman empires – which were exactly fulfilled according to the scriptures. God is the writer of our History; and He leads us into the eternal salvation.
Third - Bible in context to our present time
Hebrews 4:12 – For the word of God is living and active…
Bible is filled with God’s presence. This is why many people change, and live new lives once they come in contact with the Word of God. Inside the Bible, countless tax collectors, prostitutes, murderers, and those who are diseased found new lives. And to this day, the living and active Word of God continues to interfere with our lives. It changes those who hear it, shows miracles to those who believe, and pours blessings to those who obey God. This living history of God’s Word provides us with further conviction in our eternal salvation.

• Share a passage in the Bible which strongly influenced and changed your life.
Fourth - numerous martyrs for Christ in history
For every era, there were many persecutors who brutally murdered and tortured Christians. In the process, some false Christians denied Jesus Christ while true Christians chose martyr’s death instead of denying His name. They refused to exchange temporal death for eternal life. What could a person trade for his or her life? Many Christians chose death over their lives, because they truly experienced living God in their lifetime; the presence of living God in countless martyrs’ lives strengthens our conviction in eternal salvation.
Fifth - Work by Holy Sprit
Holy Spirit participates in the Trinity; He is the One that Jesus Christ promises to send at the time He ascended to the heaven. According to Christ’s promise, Holy Spirit came upon the apostles in Mark’s attic during the Pentecost. Afterwards, Holy Spirit gave birth to the church of Jerusalem and filled the apostles with the Sprit to go spread the Gospel. Holy Spirit enters our souls when we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior (1Corinthians 12:3, Ephesians 1:13) and He fills us whenever we ask for it in our prayers.
• When we are filled with Holy Spirit, various gifts appear such as: Speaking in tongue, ability to prophesize, word of Knowledge, word of Wisdom, discernment in spirits, faith, healing power, performing miracles, etc.
• Also, in our characters and lives, we bear the fruits of Holy Spirit which mirror Jesus Christ’s image:
Love, joy, peacefulness, patience, mercifulness, generosity, obedience, gentleness self-discipline, etcs.
Sixth - Personal experience with God, and our changed lives
Regardless of what people say, all Christians experience God’s miracle, guidance, protection, omnipresence, grace, and love. We gain our assurance of salvation through these everyday experiences. Our changed lives, which greatly contrast from our past, speak for each individual’s assurance in salvation. We previously lived in a worldly manner, possessed by material and sexual desires, and superficial beliefs. We now turned back from living in such personal pride and desires; we rejoice in Christ, live for Christ, live within Christ, and together with Christ give glory to God. This gives a sure conviction that indeed, you have received God’s eternal salvation.
Do you have the citizenship to God’s Kingdom, Heaven?
Do we have the conviction in that our names are surely written in the Book of Life, and we hold the citizenship to God’s Kingdom?
Philippians 3:20 - But our citizenship is in heaven…
For example, in America, the legal immigrants are eligible to hold citizenship after 3 to 5 years in residence. The individual is then interviewed and once passed, becomes an American citizen after taking an oath. If this is so, when a person enters America and satisfactorily fulfills all the requirements mentioned above, will the person be granted with citizenship or not?
It is the same for the citizenship in Heaven; God sets the laws for His Kingdom and grants citizenships to those who follow His rules. He promises this with His name, reputation, power, character, and with everything that He is to give us the citizenship. The law of God’s Kingdom is simply God’s Word. We ought to live our lives holding onto God’s promise of salvation, but also be able to clearly explain why we deserve the citizenship to heaven when we face God.
You should be able to confidently say:
“Heavenly Father, I became your child according to Your law in John 1:12. Also, I received the eternal salvation that you have promised in John 3:16. Moreover, According to John 10:28-29 and 1John 5:13, I have the right to live in haven with you.”
Now, you’re a legal citizen of God’s Kingdom. Do not be shaken!
Regardless of life and death, you’re God’s child and a citizen in heaven!
