I have studied ancient (Greek & Latin) at school, and modern languages all my life; I began translating when I was recruited from the ranks of the medical sales engineers by the Translation Department of the Hewlett-Packard France company in Orsay (Essonne). HPF trained me and sent me from its Paris offices to the Portable Computer Division in Oregon, where I became the senior on-site French translator.
I left HP in 1991 to become an independent translator and interpreter in the United States.
The ten years in HPF's employ were obviously a very meaningful part of my life. I was introduced to the concept of the "HP Way."
Doing a job "the HP way" is to bring together talent, skills, experience, the proper tools, and a methodical quality-control approach.
Where does the name "Mullejans" come from? "Mullejans" is a German name, originating from Aachen, Germany (Aix-la-Chapelle in French, Aken in Dutch). Petra Mullejans, a German violinist and conductor, is a distant cousin. Petra Mullejans has recorded multiple baroque music CDs, as well as many works by WA Mozart.
Prior to my time at Hewlett-Packard, I have worked for thirteen years in the Pharmaceutical (Merck & Co.) and Medical electronics (Picker, Hewlett-Packard France's Medical Group) industries. These years gave me a solid, practical medical experience.
I worked with HP's Medical Group in many French hospitals, but also worked as a nurse's aid in the Intensive Care Department of the "Cardiologique" Hospital in Lyons, as an echo advising technician in the echocardiography and imaging labs of several hospitals, watched open chest surgeries being performed in the OR, spent time working in the CCU unit and the cath lab with cardiologists.
I have translated for many medical firms besides working directly, as an employee of Hewlett-Packard France's Medical Group (now Philips): Abbott, Abbott Diabetes Care, Abbott Laboratories, Acuson, Astra-Zeneca, ATL Ultramark Ultrasound, Baxter Blood Collection and Transfusion, Becton-Dickinson, Biomet Orthopedics, Boston Scientific, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Centers for Disease Control, Cipla - Pharmaceutical Ingredients & Drug Intermediates, ConMed Linvatec, Edwards Lifesciences, Eli Lilly, Ethicon Endo-Surgery, GE Healthcare, GE Medical, Gore Medical Products, Guidant, Howmedica, Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic, Merck & Co., Merck Sharpe & Dohme, Pfizer, Siemens, Siemens Ultrasound, Smith & Nephew, Smith Kline Beecham, Sonosite, Spinal Kinetics, St Jude Medical, Steris, Stryker, Sulzer Medical, Synthelabo, The Mérieux Group, Toshiba Ultrasound...
The computer network and the high-speed Internet connection I use are state-of-the-art. I work with SDL Trados Studio 2015 and a suite of translation memory management tools, as well as SDLX, Catalyst and others. A smartphone allows me to read emails and remain in contact with customers whenever I am away from my workstation.
To perform editing tasks, I use proprietary tools and a two (side-by-side) screens. Such a setup is almost indispensable.
Thank you for reading.
