Source text - German Die Silvretta-Rallye ist DAS Gipfeltreffen automobiler Schätze. Der Wettbewerb glänzte in diesem Jahr mit einem ganz besonderen Highlight: Dem legendären BMW M1. Vierzig Jahre nach dem Debüt des Mittelmotor-Sportwagens startet die BMW Group Classic mit einem historischen Trio zu dem legendären Alpentrip.
Für uns ist es eine besondere Ehre hier den 40. Geburtstag unserer M1 zu feiern. Die Silvretta ist ja schon seit Jahren sehr, sehr hochwertig besetzt, deswegen haben wir natürlich hier die Gelegenheit genutzt uns hier zu positionieren mit unseren drei M1.
Mit dabei sind drei M1 von der BMW Group Classic und ein privater M1. Auf der 650 Kilometer langen Route geht es quer durch Österreich, die Schweiz und das Fürstentum Liechtenstein. Die Kombination aus sportlicher Herausforderung und landschaftlicher Schönheit macht den besonderen Charakter der Silvretta Classic Rallye aus. Aber vier M1 auf einen Streich gab’s hier noch nie!
Es ist ein Fahrzeug, was ja einen sehr hohen Sammlerwert auch schon darstellt. Wir sprechen ja hier zwischen sechs- und achthunderttausend Euro für sehr, sehr gute Fahrzeuge und es ist sozusagen ein gehüteter Schatz.
Der M1 ist durch seine Keilform gerade mal 1,14m hoch. Der aerodynamische Wagen wurde für die Rennstrecke entwickelt. Schon 1978 beschleunigte der M1 in weniger als sechs Sekunden von null auf 100 km/h. Das machte ihn mit einem Höchsttempo von fast 265 km/h zum schnellsten deutschen Seriensportwagen. Das bringt auch Vorteile auf den kurvigen Bergstraßen.
Das Fahrzeug fährt sich hervorragend. Es hat einen wahnsinns-Grip mit dem sehr tiefen Schwerpunkt. Er klebt förmlich auf der Straße und er eignet sich daher hervorragend für diese Passfahrten.
Der Sportwagen liegt nicht nur gut auf der Straße – er sieht auch klasse aus. Das legendäre Giugiaro-Design macht den Wagen einzigartig. Seine zeitlose Eleganz kommt auch 40 Jahre später noch gut an.
Als die Anfrage jetzt für die Silvretta Classic kam, bin ich innerlich erstmal ein bisschen ausgerastet als das Wort „M1“ fiel. Viele Leute wünschen sich einen M1 in ihrem Leben fahren zu dürfen und werden wahrscheinlich nie die Möglichkeit dazu haben. Und dass ich die Möglichkeit bekomme war für mich ganz großes Kino.
Die Zieleinfahrt der vier rollenden Raritäten war für ALLE ein ganz besonderes Erlebnis. Die Silvretta Classic vor der malerischen Alpenkulisse macht den runden Geburtstag perfekt. Happy Birthday M1!
Translation - English The Silvretta Rally is a classic car rally for the crown jewels of the automotive world. This year, a special highlight of the competition was a sparkling appearance by the legendary BMW M1. 40 years after the début of this mid-engine sportster, BMW Group Classic starts the legendary Alpine trip with an historic trio.
It is a particular honour for us to be able to celebrate the 40th anniversary of our M1 here. For years, the Silvretta has always had very, very high quality participants, which is why we used this opportunity to position ourselves here with our three M1s.
There are three M1s from BMW Group Classic and one private M1. The 400-mile route stretches right through Austria, Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein. What makes the Silvretta Classic Rally special is the combination of sporting challenge and stunning landscape. But never before have there been four M1s here at once!
It is a vehicle which already has a very high collector’s value. We are talking between 600,000 and 800,000 euros for very, very good vehicles and it is, so to speak, a well-preserved treasure.
Due to its wedge shape, the M1 is only just 1.14m high. This aerodynamic car was developed for the racing track. As early as 1978, the M1 accelerated from 0 to 60mph in less than six seconds. With a top speed of almost 165mph, that made it the fastest German production sports car, which does have its benefits on the winding mountain roads.
The vehicle drives superbly. It has an awesome grip with a very low centre of gravity. It sticks to the road and so it’s excellently suited to these mountain passes.
The sports car doesn't just sit well on the road, it looks great too. The legendary Giugiaro design makes the vehicle unique. Its timeless elegance still goes down well 40 years later.
When I received the request to take part in the Silvretta Classic, I flipped out a bit when I saw the word “M1”. So many people would love to be able to drive an M1 once in their life, but will probably never get the opportunity. And to get this chance was a huge deal for me.
Seeing these four rarities on wheels cross the finishing line was a very special experience for everyone involved. The Silvretta Classic against the backdrop of the picturesque Alps made this notable anniversary perfect. Happy birthday M1!

Source text - German Der Ausdruck Anthropozän (altgiechischzu ánthropos, deutsch ‚Mensch‘ und kainós ‚neu‘) entstand als Vorschlag zur Benennung einer neuen geochronologischen Epoche. Das Zeitalter, in dem der Mensch zu einem der wichtigsten Einflussfaktoren auf die biologischen, geologischen und atmosphärischen Prozesse auf der Erde geworden ist.
Urbanisierung, Ressourcenknappheit, Artensterben, Ozeanversauerung, Bodenerosion: Der Mensch ist spätestens seit der industriellen Revolution zum bestimmenden Faktor für das globale Ökosystem geworden. Umweltauswirkungen betreffen den ganzen Planeten und sind mit allen Geoprozessen der Erde verwoben. Im Konzept des Anthropozäns als Zeitalter des Menschen handelt dieser immer im planetaren Maßstab. Die große Frage ist: Kann der Mensch seiner Verantwortung gerecht werden und den von ihm selbst geschaffenen Risiken begegnen?
Homo faber und sein Hunger nach Energie...
Homo faber, der schaffende Mensch. Alle Menschen auf diesem Planeten schaffen etwas. Sie verändern. Sie verändern nicht nur sich und ihre Umwelt. Sie verändern den gesamten Planeten. Ein Wesen, das dermaßen viel Energie verbraucht, gab es in der Weltgeschichte noch nie. Begonnen hat alles vor 12.500 Jahren. Um diese Zeit gab es auf der Erde einige Jäger- und Sammlerkulturen, die plötzlich angefangen haben, sesshaft zu werden und Landwirtschaft zu betreiben. Durch das Speichern von Ernteerträgen sind die Populationen gewachsen, d. h. es gab immer mehr Menschen an einem Ort. Trotz hoher Kindersterblichkeit war die Fruchtbarkeit dieser Kulturen groß genug, so dass sich Städte und erste Formen von Arbeitsteilung bilden konnten. Diese Spezialisierung hat dazu geführt, dass die Menschen in ihrem Handwerk immer besser und besser wurden. Es wurden kontinuierlich mehr Werkzeuge entwickelt und sowohl Landwirtschaft als auch Viehzucht wurden immer effizienter.
Und nicht nur das: In den so genannten hydraulischen Gesellschaften, das sind diejenigen, die den Wasserstand und Wasserlauf geregelt haben, gab es erste mathematische Glanzleistungen. Die Entwicklung von ersten mathematischen Verfahren begleitete die Entwicklung von Technologien, die Wasser besser nutzen konnten. Es entstanden Brunnen, Leitungen und Kanalisation, also Infrastruktur. In dieser Zeit wurde alles „bereitgestellt“, was spätere Kulturen aufgriffen. Durch die Industrialisierung bzw. die Verwissenschaftlichung des Technologieprozesses hat eine gigantische Beschleunigung und Energieverschwendung begonnen, die uns in unsere heutige Zeit führt.
Zum Beispiel wir in Deutschland: Wenn wir die gesamte Energiemenge für Deutschland durch 365 Tage und durch rund 80 Millionen Einwohner teilen, dann verbraucht jeder Deutsche und jede Deutsche ca. 100 Kilowattstunden pro Tag. Das ist wie viel? Man setze sich auf ein Ergometer und fahre zehn Stunden 100 Watt, dann hat man eine Kilowattstunde. Und davon verbrauchen wir jeden Tag 100. Wir leben auf einem sehr hohen Energie- und Ressourcenniveau. Wir verbrauchen viel zu viele Rohstoffe, die in ihrer Abfall-Form nicht mehr wiederverwertet werden können. Das ist genau das, was zu dem Begriff des Anthropozäns führt.
Neben Flugnetzen, Pipelinenetzen und Schiffsnetzen haben wir das Internet, ein gigantisches Kommunikationsnetz, um unseren Erdball gelegt. So schreibt zum Beispiel der wissenschaftliche Beirat der Bundesregierung in seinem Gutachten über unsere gemeinsame Zukunft: „Wenn es nicht gelingt, die Digitalisierung in ein Nachhaltigkeitskonzept einzubauen, dann wird die Digitalisierung zu einem Brandbeschleuniger des Klimawandels.“
Erst seit rund 200 Jahren benutzt die Menschheit fossile Ressourcen. Dabei handelt es sich um uralten Kohlenstoff, im Erdboden abgelegt vor 300 Millionen Jahren, vor allem im Zeitalter des Karbon und Perm. Wir verheizen, verfahren und verbrauchen Kohle, Öl und Gas in einem Irrsinnstempo. In einem Jahr verbrauchen wir so viel Kohlenstoff, wie die Erde in einer Million Jahre im Boden gespeichert hat. Diese fossilen Rohstoffe landen wiederum als Abgase in der Atmosphäre und verursachen dort den Treibhauseffekt. Er entsteht dadurch, dass die sichtbare Strahlung der Sonne die Erde erwärmt. Teile davon werden reflektiert durch die weißen Flächen und ins Universum zurückgestrahlt, große Teile werden absorbiert. Das heißt, der Erdboden wird nicht nur von der Sonne beschienen, sondern auch von der Wärmelampe Atmosphäre. Je mehr Moleküle in der Atmosphäre sind, umso wärmer wird die Temperatur. Je mehr Treibhausgase wir in die Atmosphäre schicken, desto mehr Permafrost taut in Sibirien auf, desto mehr Methan entweicht in die Atmosphäre. Das sind diese Rückkopplungseffekte, ein Teufelskreislauf. Wir verlieren immer mehr weiße Fläche und damit Reflektivität. Unsere Erde absorbiert immer noch mehr Energie, es wird wärmer und wärmer.
Wir haben neben dem natürlichen längst den anthropogenen Treibhauseffekt. Es ist wärmer geworden, und das nicht nur zu Lande und in der Luft, sondern auch – ganz schlechte Nachricht – im Wasser. Noch puffern die Ozeane 93,4 Prozent des Treibhauseffektes ab. Doch je wärmer die Weltmeere werden, umso weniger können sie abpuffern.
Was können wir machen, um das Schlimmste zu verhindern?
Die einzige Lösung: Wir müssen raus aus den fossilen Ressourcen und rein in die erneuerbaren Energien. Wir können auf diesem Planeten nicht mehr so weitermachen wie bisher.
Klar ist: Man muss es sich leisten können, diesen Weg der großen Transformation zu gehen. Daher sind wir, die reichen Industrieländer, am Zug. Die gute Nachricht: Wir haben bereits die Technologien, um uns mit erneuerbarer Energie zu versorgen: Windräder, Photovoltaik, Biogasanlagen, Solarthermie. Die wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisse sind eindeutig: Die Sonne wirft dermaßen viel Energie auf diesen Planeten, dass wir nur einen winzigen Teil davon bräuchten – und zwar für die Bedürfnisse aller Menschen!
Wir müssen vom Reden, Diagnostizieren und Analysieren endlich ins Handeln kommen. Und so schließt sich der Kreis. Der Homo Faber ist der schaffende, der handelnde Mensch. Die Erkenntnisse haben wir, wir haben die Verantwortung dafür – also los!
Translation - English The term Anthropocene (Ancient Greek anthropos meaning “human” and kainos meaning “new”) originated as a proposal to name a new geochronological epoch: the age in which humans have become one of the most important influencing factors on the biological, geological, and atmospheric processes on Earth.
Urbanization, resource scarcity, species extinction, ocean acidification, soil erosion: Humans have been the determining factor for the global ecosystem since the Industrial Revolution at the latest. Environmental impacts affect the whole planet and are interwoven with all Earth's processes. In the concept of the Anthropocene as the age of the human, humans always acts on a planetary scale. The big question is: Can humans live up to their responsibility and face the risks they have created?
Homo faber and his hunger for energy...
Homo faber, the creator. All human beings on this planet create something. They make changes. They not only change themselves and their environment. They change the entire planet. Never in world history has there been a being that consumes so much energy. It all started 12,500 years ago. At the time, there were hunter-gatherer cultures on Earth, which suddenly started to settle and to practice agriculture. By storing crop yields, populations grew, resulting in more and more people living in one place. Despite high infant mortality, the fertility of these cultures was high enough for cities and the first forms of division of labor to take shape. This specialization led to people becoming better and better at their trade. Tools were continuously developed and both agriculture and animal husbandry became more efficient.
And not only that: It was in the so-called hydraulic societies, those that regulated the water level and watercourses, that we saw the first mathematical feats. The development of the first mathematical methods accompanied the development of technologies that could make better use of water. Wells, pipelines, and sewage systems, i.e. infrastructure, were built. During this time, everything was “prepared” for subsequent cultures to then take up. Through the industrialization and scientification of the technological process, a massive acceleration and energy wastage began, which leads us to our present time.
For example, in Germany, if we divide the total amount of energy used in Germany by 365 days and by 80 million inhabitants, then every German consumes approximately 100 kilowatt hours per day. And how much is that? If you sit on an exercise bike and ride for ten hours at 100 watts, then that is one kilowatt hour. And we consume 100 of those every day. We live at a very high level of energy and resources. We consume far too many raw materials that in their waste form cannot be recycled. And this is exactly what leads to the term Anthropocene.
In addition to flight networks, pipeline networks, and ship networks, we have laid the Internet, a gigantic communications network, around our globe. For example, the German Advisory Council on Global Change writes in its report on our common future: If it is not possible to integrate digitization into a sustainability concept, then digitization will become an accelerant of climate change.
Humankind has only been using fossil resources for around 200 years. These resources are ancient carbon, deposited in the ground 300 million years ago, mainly in the Carboniferous and Permian eras. We are burning, processing, and consuming coal, oil, and gas at an insane rate. In one year, we consume as much carbon as the Earth has stored in the ground in a million years. These fossil resources in turn end up in the atmosphere as exhaust gases and cause the greenhouse effect there. It is caused by the fact that the visible radiation of the sun heats up the Earth. Parts of it are reflected by white surfaces and radiated back into the universe, large parts are absorbed. This means that the ground is warmed not only by the sun, but also by the atmosphere. The more molecules there are in the atmosphere, the warmer the temperature becomes. The more greenhouse gases we send into the atmosphere, the more the permafrost thaws in Siberia, the more methane escapes into the atmosphere. These are those feedback loops, a vicious circle. We are losing more and more white surfaces and with them reflectivity. Our Earth is absorbing more and more energy and is getting warmer and warmer.
In addition to the natural greenhouse effect, we have long been experiencing the anthropogenic greenhouse effect. It has become warmer, not only on land and in the air, but also – and this is very bad news – in the water. The oceans still buffer 93.4 percent of the greenhouse effect. But the warmer the oceans become, the less they can buffer.
What can we do to prevent the worst?
The only solution: We need to stop using fossil fuels and use renewable energy. We cannot continue the way we have been doing on this planet anymore.
One thing is clear: To go down this route of great transformation, you have to be able to afford it, which is why the ball is in our court, that of the rich industrialized nations. The good news is that we already have the technology to supply ourselves with renewable energy: wind turbines, photovoltaics, biogas plants, solar thermal energy. The scientific findings are clear: The sun casts so much energy on this planet that we really only need a tiny part of it for our needs – for the needs of everyone!
We need to move from talking, diagnosing, and analyzing to action. And then the circle will close. Homo faber is the creator, the human being who acts. We have the knowledge. We're responsible for this. Let’s go!
