كان هدف البرتغاليين من التوسع الاستعماري هو القهر العسكري واستغلال هذه القوة للحصول على موارد اقتصادية، وحينما ظهر الهولنديون والانجليز في أوائل القرن السابع عشر بالمحيط الهندي اتبعوا سياسة جديدة، فهم يقصدون التجارة أولاً، ثم تأتي بعد ذلك القوة الحربية لحماية تلك التجارة، وقد تكلفت شركات تجارية مساهمة بحركة الاستعمار الهولندي والبريطاني في آسيا وتأسست الشركتان الانجليزية والهولندية تقريباً في نفس الوقت (1600 – 1602) على التوالي، وبمرور الوقت حصلت هاتان الشركتان على امتيازات ملكية، فكانت الحكومات تتنازل لهما عن حق اعلان الحرب وعقد المعاهدات مع الدول الآسيوية أو الإفريقية التي تقع في مناطق احتكارها.
وبينما تركزت جهود شركة الهند الهولندية في جزر الهند الشرقية، انصرفت الشركة البريطانية إلى شبه القارة الهندية ذاتها ولكن ذلك لم يمنع الشركتين من أن توسعا أعمالهما في جميع السواحل الواقعة على الطريق إلى مناطق امتيازاتهما.
نجح الهولنديون في الاستقرار بميناء "بندر عباس" وهذا أتاح لهم الفرصة (2) للتعرف على أوضاع المنطقة فاستغلوها لصالحهم وتفاوضوا مع الشاه عباس للحصول على امتياز يمنحهم نسبة من تجارة الحرير في فارس، وقد زاد من خوفهم وفاة الشاه عباس عام 1629، إذ فقد الانجليز بموته صديقاً وفياً، مما هدد بانهيار نفوذهم خصوصاً وأن العادة كانت قد جرت على أساس أن تتجدد الامتيازات كلما تولى الأمر في فارس شاه جديد (3).
لذا اغتنم الهولنديون هذه الفرصة للقضاء على تجارة الإنكليز، فقدموا الرشاوى لرجال الحكومة الفارسية، وعرضوا أثماناً عالية للسلع التي كانوا يحصلون عليها، فمال خلفه للهولنديين الذين أخذوا يزاحمون الانجليز ويعملون على زحزحتهم من مكانتهم التي كانوا قد تبوأوها في الخليج.
Translation - English 2- Dutch Presence:
The goal of the Portuguese colonial expansion was military oppression and exploitation of this power to obtain economic resources. When the Dutch and the English emerged in the early 17th century in the Indian Ocean, they followed a new policy, as they aim at trade. Then the military force comes to protect that trade. Commercial enterprises were involved in the movement of Dutch and British colonization in Asia. The English and Dutch companies were founded at the same time (1600-1602) respectively, and over time these companies acquired royal privileges, as the governments were waiving the right of declaration of war and holding treaties with Asian or African countries located in their monopolistic areas.
While the efforts of Dutch India were focused and limited in the East Indies, the British company moved to the Indian subcontinent itself, but this did not prevent the two companies from expanding their business on all the coasts on the road of their privileged areas. The Dutch succeeded in settling in "Bandar Abbas" port. This gave them a chance (2) to be aware of the circumstances of the region. Thus, they exploited this knowledge for their account and negotiated with the Shah Abbas to obtain a privilege granting them a share of the silk trade in Persia. Therefore, the death of Shah Abbas in 1629 increased their fear as his death was considered for the English as a death of a faithful friend, threatening the collapse of their influence, especially since the custom that was running that the privileges would be renewed whenever a new Persia Shah takes over the authority(3).
