This term comes from a company report, and I think it refers to Gross Margin, although I would welcome peer confirmation.
The sentence reads "La marge sur matière a aussi pu être fortement accrue, parfois de plus de 100 € par tonne". The context indicates a general steep rise in steel prices due to the scarcity of raw materials and scrap. I take it that, in the midst of the disarray into which the market has been put, one good feature was that this manufacturer was able to increase his gross margin.
