I want ot know what the L stands for in the Roman numeral XL. Maybe it is close to the Italian word for fifty?

Sandra, fifty in Latin is quinquaginta, pretty close to the Italian word for 50 (cinquanta), but I ignore where the letter "L" comes from, or why it has been chosen to represent 50
