Swedish term

ute i landet

Swedish to English Medical Medical (general) research
Not really a medical question, but occurs in a medical text. Context: "Andra liknande verksamheter ute i landet, bland annat i Linköping, har visat..."
Does this mean "out in the country(side)" (as opposed to the city) or "around the country", i.e. in various places in the country? Native speaker's advice appreciated.

Jan - I think yours is the most helpful answer, but you have not posted it as an answer. Would you care to do so?
Clare Barnes Jun 1, 2006:
I'm with Jan too - as someone who lives "på landet" and "ute i landet"!
hirselina Jun 1, 2006:
I agree with Jan
Jan Leinonen Jun 1, 2006:
I would say "around the country" rather than "in the country", as the latter would be "ute PÅ landet" in Swedish. And of course Linköping is a city.

throughout the country

I'm not a native speaker, but this is what I'd say as a native speaker of American English.
Peer comment(s):

neutral asptech : The hidden meaning of the expression is of course "all of the country except Stockholm".

in other parts of the country / in various places round the country

This strikes me as the most natural way to express this in English. They are not saying that this happens everywhere in the country, just in various places in Sweden, including Linköping. I agree with your 'various places'.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Clare Barnes : I think that "around the country" hits this on the head. If the point was to express in various places you'd be much more likely to find "i vissa delar av landet", but it is just a question of shades of meaning.
