English translation: health and beauty shop/store

English term or phrase: drugstore
I would like to continue a thread from a KudoZ question posted in DE>EN
http://www.proz.com/kudoz/1684660
Three UK nationals contributed answers or comments to this question but all have been based in Germany for several years. They were of the opinion that UK shoppers would be comfortable with the term ‘drugstore’ to designate a shop selling health and beauty products but not having an in-store pharmacy.
I am interested in the opinions of UK-resident native British English speakers. What is the generic term for this type of retail outlet as used by the companies who operate them, the staff who work in them and the customers who patronise them?

Asker: Good evening Brazil! Unfortunately, I don't think Google is going to prove conclusive on this question about UK usage.

neutral  juvera: Drugstore in the UK is a chemist: it has an in-store pharmacy. Your quotes: 1. chemist stores chain, 2. coming from the USA, 3. ?

disagree  Ian Wrentmore: Nope. This is a US term - and not used in the UK on the high street.

chemist's

Explanation:
I am not a UK native, but have worked with primarily British nationals for 12 years. They, without exception, use this term. Furthermore, it is found in all teaching materials for students learning English.

Boots is probably the UK's biggest chemist's: http://www.boots.co.uk/homePage/BootsHome.html

"Health and beauty shop" is what they put on their Web site, but I have never heard a person-on-the-street use this term.

Asker: Thanks for your note in the AtA box: "A drugstore would always have a pharmacy". Presumably this is a reference to the USA? As a UK resident I am only familiar with 'drugstores' from American fiction.

neutral  Armorel Young: Yes, but Boots shops always have a pharmacy, and as a UK resident I would always expect to find a pharmacy in a chemist's shop

-> I'd say you're right, but as an American, I would always expect a drugstore to have a pharmacy, hence my choice! Happy holidays.

neutral  juvera: Agree with Armorel. The point is, that the question specifically asks for the term for shops selling beauty products but WITHOUT a pharmacy. / Sometimes it happens to me too. :-)

-> Yes, you're exactly right. I was focusing too much on term and not on explanation. Have asked asker for clarification.
