French term

sacrifices prealables

French to English Bus/Financial Economics European economy
hi,
im translating an economic text from fr-en and i'm having some problems with understanding what is meant by the 2nd part of the sentence

(from: c'est parce que la stabilite monetaire allait creer les conditions de cette croissance que dans les annees quatre-vingt-dix, les Europeens ont consenti aux sacrifices prealables a la mise en place de l'euro.)

I'm really not sure about the bit from the "Europeans ont consenti" onwards...

all the context is here:.... c'est au nom de la croissance que l'achevement du marche interieur a ete entrepris au milieu des annees quatre-vingt. c'est parce que la stabilite monetaire allait creer les conditions de cette croissance que dans les annees quatre-vingt-dix, les Europeens ont consenti aux sacrifices prealables a la mise en place de l'euro.

I'd very much appreciate it if anyone could let me know their opinions etc and be able to give me a gist meaning.

Thanks!

First I agree specifically with the first 2 answers. You asked about the gist - well the whole things revolves around how/why the Europeans agreed to the single market, central bank and the euro.

It was the promise of growth that led to the completion of the single market in the nineteen eighties. It was because monetary stability was supposed to create the conditions for this growth that the Europeans agreed to make the sacrifices necessary for the euro to be set up .(in the first place - that is what implied).

As we all know this growth has not been forthcoming for most of the Euro zone (yet!) - countries which stayed out like Britain and Sweden have had higher growth.

I meant to say "accepted"...
Peer comment(s):

agree Olga Cartlidge : the sacrifices that had to be made before the euro was introduced ( It has cost the French and arm and a leg, hasn t it ?)
