Explanation:
The classic “treadmill theory” provides a partial explanation of how this seemingly contradictory
situation unfolds (Cochrane 1958). According to the theory, an initial set of farmers, the so-called
“early-bird” or “progressive” farmers, adopts new technologies in order to gain from increased
productivity and profits. As more farmers adopt the same technologies and increase their productivity,
supplies of their crops increase, driving down the market price for their crops. The drop in prices puts
pressure on other farmers to increase their productivity, leading more and more farmers to adopt the
technology. This causes crop prices to fall even further.

Le cadre analytique sur lequel repose cette évaluation est exposé au début de l’ouvrage. Ce cadre intègre les travaux faits par les principaux auteurs américains (Black, Schultz, Johnson et Cochrane notamment) pour comprendre l’évolution sur plusieurs décennies du secteur agricole dans leur pays, en particulier le fait que, depuis plus de trente ans, la production continuait d’augmenter tandis que les prix baissaient et que, par suite, la rémunération des facteurs de production en agriculture était chroniquement inférieure à celle des mêmes facteurs dans les autres secteurs de l’économie....
