Estoy revisando un artículo en inglés sobre contaminación de aguas embotelladas y tengo un artículo similar en español de los mismo autores para guiarme. Los autores tienen la expresión "defective samples" para indicar "muestras defectuosas". Se refieren específicamente a muestras fuera de especificación. Me gustaría saber si en este caso sería mejor colocar "defective samples" (pocas referencias relacionadas con bacterias), out-of-specification samples, como recomiendan en los kudoz (aún menor número de referencias en el contexto) o si hay una mejor alternativa.

El equivalente en español, que tengo como referencia, dice:

"La evaluación por marcas arrojó que 9 embotelladoras exhibieron productos **fuera de especificación**: C, D, G, N, Q, S, U, V y X. "

El texto en inglés dice:

"Out of the 26 domestic brands of bottled water studied, a total of nine exhibited products that were **defective**: C, D, G, N, Q, S, U, V and X. "

"Fig. 1 shows the percentage of positive samples. From the 137 samples tested, 109 bottles (79.6 %) complied with national and WHO standards. Among the group of **out-of-specification samples** (20.4%), three (2.2%) contained coliforms, twenty-four (17.5%) contained P. aeruginosa and one (0.7%) of the samples contained Enterococcus spp.. All bottles tested were negative for Escherichia coli. Pseudomonas spp. was the predominant genus (48.9%), including P. alcaligenes, P. fluorescens and P. putida (1.9% in each case)."

En el estudio similar (con resultados no actualizados) se lee:

I think this adjective is appropriate as "comply" occurs as a verb in your text - "109 bottles (79.6%) complied with ..." (you can of course vary the adjective you use from one place to another, as it's not critical that you always use the same one)

Explanation:
Yo no usaría 'out-of-specification samples''; aunque no esté incorrecto, no suena natural. Por eso usaría lo antedicho, o 'samples that did not conform to standards. Tampoco usaría 'defective' porque para mi eso suena como algo que no está funcionando.

Explanation:
The latter is usually abbreviated "OOS".
I've seen it a lot in the documents I've translated.
That's the reason they probably literally use "fuera de especificación"
