plancher has a meaning of "to be grilled during an exam" (viz Ultralingua), but in this context I would put simply discuss. As you can see in these refs, that is clearly the meaning...

plancher seems more intensive than just work "on" though the "work" suggestion is fine, so I suggest "work out"

While I agree with most of the other comments I think there's an element of 'obligation de résultat' in 'plancher' which is found equally in 'grilling someone in an exam' (Does she get it or not?) as in this example: What are we going to do about this directive?
