The band put in another enormous American tour, supported by the larger-than-life Kiss. Bill Ward was by now employing a Botticelli-sized clam device to embellish his drum riser, and the band’s extravagant stage garb included lengthy frills for Ozzy, ballooning silver flares on the part of Butler and jester-styled sleeves for Iommi, which dragged along the stage as they were so long.

Dispositif en forme de coquille Saint-Jacques...
...d'une taille semblable à celle de Botticelli
I think this is a reference to the larger-than-life clam-shell used to support Venus in Botticelli's famous painting.
You'd need to see a picture of it to find a more apppropriate word than 'dispositif', depending on just exactly what this 'device' was — unless, of course, it does indeed literally mean 'devise' (though that seems unlikely).
Here's an image that might give you the idea:

Actually, this is a better link, to the full-sized image:

Now seeing the actual thing in the photo found by Sylvia, I think I'd probably say 'décor' instead of 'dispositif'.

And since the size is mcuh bigger than life-size, you might be able to use something more exuberant, like 'sur l'échelle de Botticelli' or somesuch!

Thanks, Oliver! I can just picture Bill Ward rising like Venus from the waves with his kit! ;-)))

Comment: "merci beaucoup, les photos, ça aide à mieux visualiser les choses."
Discussion
However, it is indeed referring to the painting I cited earlier in my answer below.
(Personally, I think I prefer my clamshells filled with Venus!)
