문화관광부는 그 동안 한글을 알파벳으로 표기하는 게 발음과 거리가 멀고, 컴퓨터에서 표기하기 힘든 알파벳을 주로 사용해서 컴퓨터 시대에 적절하지 않다는 문제를 해결하기 위해 한글의 로마자 표기법을 새롭게 고쳤습니다.

그에 따르면 가나다라마바사아자차카타파하를 ga na da ra ma ba sa a ja cha ka ta pa ha로 표기하는 등 기존의 어려운 체계를 고쳤습니다.

기존 알파벳 표기법과 큰 차이점이 바로 부산입니다. 기존에는 Pusan으로 표기했습니다만, 이제는 Busan으로 변경된 것입니다. 그외에도 '가'를 표기하는데 'ka'로 썼던 것을 바꾸어 'ga'로 쓰기 시작한 것입니다. 또한, 초성과 종성의 위치 등에 따라 표기하는 글자가 달라진 것도 큰 차이입니다.

이 표기법은 이미 2000년 7월 7일에 고시된 것으로 표지판은 2005년 12월 31일 이전에 모두 변경되었습니다. 출판물의 경우 2002년 2월 28일까지 이 표기법으로 모두 변경되었습니다.

이제는 새로운 표기법으로 자리 잡아서 모두에겐 새 표기법이 익숙할 겁니다. 하지만, 과거 매큔-라이샤워 표기법에 익숙한 사람에겐 어색할 수도 있겠죠.
