to auction the honor of carrying the Saint

Creo que son verdaderas subastas, en donde los mejores oferentes tienen el honor de llevar al santo, las andas o desempeñar otras funciones importantes dentro de la celebración.

auctioning-off of a priviledge/ donor bidding

It actually is a form of auction- itis giving the priviledge to the highest contributor. So many people want the priviledge of being the important person in these rituals that they are either officially or un oficially given to the person who donates the most.

agree Noni Gilbert Riley : Yes, they are indeed auctions - and the privileges are given to the highest bidder, although when I have watched it, it has always been "official".

Thanks Noni. When I see these people groan under the weight of some of these things I am amazed at their zeal!
agree Bubo Coroman (X) : "donor bidding" expresses it very well
