Ahora tengo trece años y medio, y aprendí muchas cosas, entre otras, que los tipos que gritan y castigan e insultan son en el fondo unos pobres diablos. Pero entonces yo era mucho más chico y no lo sabía. Mirta no lo sabe ni siquiera ahora, pero ella es tres años menor que yo, y sé que a veces en la noche se despierta llorando. Es el miedo. ¿Usted alguna vez tuvo miedo? A Mirta siempre le parece que el Viejo va a aparecer borracho, y que se va a quitar el cinturón para pegarle. Todavía no se ha acostumbrado a la nueva situación. Yo, en cambio, he tratado de acostumbrarme.
