Tamara Grace Blom (asker) Feb 28, 2012:
Thank you all for your help, but even if I pasted the entire document you wouldn't be any the wiser regarding context. I have asked the writer of the document for further clarification. Thanks anyway, Merci!
AllegroTrans Feb 28, 2012:
It's a "linguistic example" of what? a language class? a street protest? a church service? a barbecue? come on asker, we are in the dark here and cannot see your document - you need to help us if we are to help you!
Tony M Feb 28, 2012:
Context Isolated expression or not, it would at least help if you told us what it was supposed to be a linguistic example of?
Tamara Grace Blom (asker) Feb 28, 2012:
It is an isolated expression which is given as an linguistic example - but has absolutely nothing to do with the subject in question, so I cannot add any info to help. Sorry.
writeaway Feb 28, 2012:
what is the context? how was this used?

Sing along

I would say sing along
Example sentence:

On Sundays, before breakfast they used to sing along to pray God and thank the Lord...

Peer comment(s):

agree Laurette Tassin : http://www.linguee.fr/francais-anglais/search?source=auto&qu... W/A and Tony are right of course other contexts than song for instance come to mind

Given as an example by an English UK colleague I am currently working with.
neutral writeaway : all depends on the context. there are several options but who knows without more info.

neutral Tony M : I tend to agree with W/A: this is one option, but with quite specific connotations; it might not be suitable in all instances.

sing your heart out

unless it's a typo for choeur. Maybe this works?
Peer comment(s):

neutral Tony M : Not entirely sure about your suggestion,but well done for being the first to suggest a possible typo!

Thanks Tony, but can't claim first for typo. See reference

...when one has no idea what the question is about, but could it have something to do with common mistakes in French?

e.g.

"CHŒUR / CŒUR

Une faute très courante consiste à écrire : "chanter en cœur", au lieu de "chanter en chœur". Les voyageurs, attendris, chantèrent en chœur apibeursdè touillou -- Queneau.

Une autre faute très courante consiste à oublier que cœur ne s'écrit pas coeur, et que chœur ne s'écrit pas choeur."
