: A "furniture maker" is a fabricant de mobilier; a "cabinet-maker" is an ébénisté and an upholsterer is a tapissier(ère).

: There are offcial definitions and definitions we use every day which do not necessarily match. "Ameublement" includes the making of items of furniture and includes upholstery too.

GDT = granddictionnaire.com (Canada) for "outfitter". Just found hits for US for "furniture outfitter".
Otherwise I imagine Wikipedia has "upholstery" for the profession, thus "upholsterer" for the individual.

Outfitters is closer to supplier of furniture and "upholsterer" (UK) perhaps too general as although it covers the covers (fabric, elather) etc, padding, springs and so on I agree that "confectionneur d'ameublement" probably relates to "furnishings" alone.
There is probably an official definition for this term as there have been for others posted by Lavinia recently.

I know that an "upholsterer" is "tapisseur", yes, you are right. "Upholsterer" covers padding, springs etc but does also the making and fitting of furniture covers. It may be too general for "confectionneur d'ameublement".

Outfitter is not right for UK here, as I indicate. But it is also wrong for the US, as it means "outfit" as in "supply"!

Or is it 'furniture repairs' in the much wider sense? I hardly think so here, it would be an odd use of 'retouche', non ?
I'm currently reading through the official CODES ROME for the "métiers"... makes for stimulating reading on a SUnday afternoon!
Maybe the CODES APE might come in handy too....
Looked through them and have concluded that it includes household furniture and furnishings. New suggestion in post. As I read it, it covers therefore covers the work of upholsterers, furniture and cabinet makers.
As a colleague has pointed out, there also exists the job name 'tapissier' — the way you translate the question term may depend on whether or not you also have this alternative/related term in your document?
