Swedish term

ämnesdidaktik

Swedish to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy Types of pedagogy
Jag hoppas samtidigt undersöka om och i så fall hur denna idé utgör grund för ett ökat ämnesdidaktiskt inslag i förskolan, i det här fallet gällande matematik.

Discussion

Ronja Addams-Moring Sep 29, 2012:
Swedes call this "subject didactics" in Eng texts There is a challenge here, between translating into the concept that Swedish (or Norwegian, Austrian or other north-European) teachers or researchers themselves use when writing in English, and translating into a concept that is readily understandable by Anglo-American readers. I would use this the first time the concept occurs in the text: "subject didactics (also called subject-specific pedagogics)" and after that use "subject didactics".

neutral Anna Herbst : It is of course not wrong to use the word "didactics" here, but it is not recommended. Se Hamilton's article at http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/14681369900200048

agree Anna Herbst : Eftersom didaktik är läran om undervisning tycker jag att ditt förslag är helt i sin ordning, särskilt som begreppet "didactics" inte används lika utbrett på engelska som "didaktik" på svenska, se http://www.ne.se/didaktik

subject-specific pedagogy

Subject-specific pedagogy (with or without hyphen) would be the term corresponding best to the Swedish (continental European) ämnesdidaktik, as didactics is a term that is rarely used in English-speaking countries. As David Hamilton from Umeå Universitet explains:
"recent Anglo-American usage of ‘pedagogy’ mirrors the mainland European use of ‘didactic’. /---/didactics has a negative valuation in the Anglo-American mind. It denotes formalist educational practices that combine ‘dogma’ with ‘dullness’ (Oxford English Dictionary). It conjures up the unwelcome European ghosts of an unattractive educational past. By contrast, pedagogics is not an alien notion to Anglo-American educationalists".
David Hamilton (1999): The pedagogic paradox (or why no didactics in England?), Pedagogy, Culture & Society, 7:1, 135-152
Example sentence:

Teacher Education /.../at the preschool, elementary or secondary school level. It includes the study of children and youth, school and society, and subject-specific pedagogy.

Peer comment(s):

agree Leif Henriksen : Interestingly, all the references to 'didactics' are from non English sources. Translating content/meaning is different from translating words.

subject didactics

'The following definition of what the area of subject didactics may include serves as a basis for the work undertaken by the Subject Didactics Resource Group:

”Subject didactics consists of all the reflections one may associate with a subject and the teaching of this subject that may lead to increased knowledge about the nature of the subject, the legitimacy of the subject, and increased knowledge about how the subject can be learned, taught and developed” (Lorentzen et al. 1998:7/Aase 1990 in Norges Forskningsråd [The Research Council of Norway], KUPP [Knowledge development in professional education and practice], p. 51).'
