Ceramic tiles
Taken from an exhibition on the history of Portuguese ceramic tiles or azulejo. Here's the full sentence:
"É uma pintura cerâmica de qualidade pelo exercício cuidado das aguadas e das várias tonalidades de azul e pela representação equilibrada da anatomia, obra provável de um artista com formação na pintura de cavalete."
I could hazard a guess at many different translations in this context, but if anyone has come across this term before, your input would be much appreciated. And if you need any more context, feel free to ask in the discussion section.
Thanks!

glazed washes or washes
This is a very common term used amongst ceramic artists (I work with many of them at the Arts Center in Vernon, BC). Please see references.
Even though Portuguese is my mother tongue, my English is at native level.

Example sentence:
I broke up the wash and added some clear water to soften the area that would be a waterfall

oxide wash or stain
I agree with Chiara that "washes" is probably the best word but in terms of pottery, I believe they are talking of oxide washes or stains and not watercolors, which are done on paper.
