The idea (not the translation) for disintegrating comes from Robb's diccionario para ingenieros.

Anyway, I think that's what the sentence is saying, if the core disintegrates (comes apart) it will lose mass.

I'm afraid that I read it as "desfibración del núcleo" and I've used the gerund as it follows a preposition (from) in the sentence I have given as an example.

Tampoco he encontrado más cosas, pero salvo que alguien encuentre algo mejor, antes de caer en desfibración (no es palabra española) simplemente hablaría de mass loss.

agree SusyZ : existe desfibrado=removal of fiber. Talvez podrías decir "loss of fiber material". Saludos :-)
